Nipped down the lotties this morning to water in the greenhouse etc and checked round the plots.
A few days ago I had started to clear out a lot of the excess foliage on my outdoor toms.
Got 2 beds with 20 plants in each, the beds are 1 mtr apart. One with Gardeners Delight and Moneymaker, the other with Sub Arctic and Golden Nugget (plus an odd Harlequin).
I noticed at the time that in the GN/SA bed that some of the leaves looked shriveled and those leaf stems were blackened.
Now today I find the tom ends are brown and knobbly and the majority of the leaves are shrivelling.
Cut off a truss of the Golden Nugget and a leaf stem and asked advice off one of the old timers on my way off site. I asked if this was blight although it looked different to me from what we had last year. He said no, it could be a soil deficiency but the odd thing is that the Harlequin appears alright and the other bed appears fine as well.
Came home and did a bit of investigation and it looks as if I left the foliage on too long in the wet and humid conditions and they have suffered from a mould infection.
So thank you Mother Nature for your Birthday present to me. Oh well a bonfire tomorrow then!
