A good rub with a dock leaf helps but the prickling will last for a good few hours. I did the same last weekend. Have a large glass of wine or whatever, it helps to numb the burning.
I had a glass of Pimm's and lemonade ( lots of Pimm's not much lemonade ) I also found that running hot water as hot as you can bear over it helped I did this a few times,

we got stung as kids all the time and I have so many memories of having our little chubby legs rubbed with dock leaves by exasperated parents. Plain yoghurt will cool it down too.
Savlon's no good - it's antiseptic and you need antihistamine. Rub with dock leaves as soon as you get stung - as Headfry says they usually grow near nettles. Then when you get home wash well with really hot water and dry. When cool apply antihistamine cream.
An old wives tale - the sap from the stalk of the nettle rubbed on the sting. The stalk doesn't appear to sting(grasp carefully). Perhaps a bit of the dog.....?
