how to fix guttering to shed

I've put my 7x5 shed up. Now I need to fix up some guttering to collect the rainwater.

How?

What do I need? A length of guttering, obviously, but how many clip-thingies? And how do you fit the downpipe on?

I've googled, and looked on B&Q etc, but they all assume you already know what you're doing, and I don't.
I haven't a scooby when it comes to DIY - I think I'm missing a gene or something

Gee, with two sheds already, you should know by now, lol!

For the clip thingies, I would put them approx every metre, so for a 7 x 5 (is that feet?), I'd have 3 clips, one near each end and one in the middle. For things like this I always buy n + 1, where n is the number you need, with one as spare for when you snap it in a tantrum!!

The downpipe on my field shelter is fitted in almost the same way as the guttering, with plastic rings. These are not complete, so you 'snap' them onto the down pipe and fix the protrusions to the wood with screws. Does that make sense?

You could always have a sly look at someone else's. That's what I always do!!

I would go into B&Q and say 'here is a photo of my new shed. It needs some guttering, what do I need?'

On the list of diy jobs in the world, this is on the pretty achievable scale - you will need a screwdriver for the clips, and remember to create a slight fall for the water to flow in the direction you want it to!

AHA - I did this on saturday.
One length of guttering 2m long. Get the cheaper and thinner style [I got grey] rather than the bulkier one. Mine all came from wickes.
One length of downpipe, they sell it in 2m lengths so you'll need to cut to size.
4 clips that hold the guttering up
I bought 2, as my downpipe won't be long, but 2 or 3 of the round clips that get screwed to the wood for the downpipe.
One end piece with the downpipe also moulded.
One end piece stopper.
Screws that fit the holes.

Assemble the 2m guttering with the downpipe end and the stopper end.

Attach one of the clips, loosely - just to see where to drill the holes.

Drill one and check it. Then drill the others. Mine has a very slight tilt towards the downpipe end. Screw all 4 clips [or 3 if you break one!], and clip in the guttering.

Cut down pipe to length.

Drill hole/s for the downpipe clip/s

Screw in one or more of the clips and slide the downpipe through and into the top piece of guttering. It should hold it. If not, you can pop a piece of duck tape or other around the clip to hold it up.

The hardest bit is clipping the guttering together, esp the two end pieces.

Took about 30 mins, from arriving at site with bits and pieces, and drill and motorised screwdriver to having the lot fitted and onto next job.

Got mine from Wickes too a good few years ago. Much cheaper than other outlets. Cos of the amount of overhang on my roof I had to screw some blocks of wood to the shed to ensure that the gutter actually took the water but it wasn't difficult, just make sure that you attach to solid wood not just any thin planks that may be part of your shed.

Wickes also do "how to" leaflets. Try the gutter with a bucket of water before you finally fix it. It's easy for something to look "right" only for you to find the water runs away from the outlet when you've finished.

update: I did it, I got it. Grand total of £13 ... great tip from Zazen to look for the thinner guage cheaper guttering.
Just got to fix it all up, tomorrow.

Dead easy......all you need to do is to be able to cut 22.5 deg angles on ends of guttering and get joints to fit! (piece of cake)!

oh yeah cool, they will go perfectly with my precisely cut 90 degree angles on the ...erm rectangularish shed

Please remember that when you have fitted your guttering that to collect the maximum amout of rain water, that the roofing felt should come down into your guttering otherwise a lot of it will miss the guttering completely.
