son is moving all his stuff to his new flat tonight,and starting his new life at uni ....... it's all packed up now, so weird that the pc isn't in the living room, the landing cupboard is now empty of all the stuff i've been collecting for this day, for years, he has everything he needs, (except for a mixing bowl to make his omlettes in ... he likes omlettes) even has a corkscrew and a tin opener, and i've even managed to get him to take my iron, so i i have an excuse to never iron again

though all the furniture i've saved for him will be staying in the loft till he gets his first unfurnished place.

The whole house seems really empty now, and he's not even gone yet..... he's moving himself out on sunday, so i've got my tissues at the ready, and i do believe i may partake in a large bottle of voddy sunday night ..... ok well a couple of glasses, cos i don't drink so it wrecks me half way down the first glass lol ........ doesn't seem 5 minutes since i was crying at his first day at school.

You wait. On Monday you'll be in his room decorating or making plans for a 'study'. It's a Mum thing! I take it you're not going there with him? Half my flippin family followed me to Lancaster - it was embarassing!

Oh, he'll stick it out, he's only 15 mins away on the train, and he is going to get a small freezer, so i can fill it up for him with healthy home made food (have a stack of soups and bolognaise, pies etc already made....... ok i put some beans and pot noodles in his food box too, and i'll make him a fresh loaf to take

he's got an en-suite study bedroom, with a shared lounge and kitchen, but yes, i'm going down tonight, cos we are setting everything up, so it's ready to move straight in on Sunday.

At least you're close enough to reach him in times of need (his and yours!), but not so close that he'll be cramping your style when you rediscover a life of your own!! I was absolutely desperate the first time mine called feeling poorly and sorry for herself, knowing that I wasn't close enough to do anything useful.

I will be so happy and proud if my boys go to uni, I was the first one in our family and we talk of it as a 'when' and not an 'if' for ours.

I am sure even though they are only 4 and 1, the time will FLY.

thanks i almost feel grown up now there was never any doubt in my mind he would go to uni, he's always known he'd be going lol (both me and his dad didn't go, and ended up going as mature students, and missed out on actually being a student) ..... treasure the little kiddy moments, cos they sure don't last long.

yeah i know what you mean, he was debating going to oxford,Cambridge, or London, and i said he couldn't go to oxford, cos i didn't know anyone there, whereas i have a really good friend in cambridge (who's actually a policeman ) who would keep an eye on him, feed him and do his washing, my auntie and cousins live near the uni in London, but he decided if he was going to be skint anywhere he'd rather do it near home. (secretly i think he was more worried more about mum needing help and him not being near enough to give it)

Yeah, but how exciting it must be for him; I was desperate to go to uni at that age but had to get a job after college at 18; So I befriended some art students and used to go to their parties/gigs etc; so I go the best of both worlds. The parties and the friends, but not having to do the work. I eventually got the degree a few year back; but I'd have loved to have gone to Uni at the right age.

I lived with a load of students, so did go to good parties like you, but definitely missed the full student experience.

I don't know why, but I LOVED doing my washing at uni. I used to go to the Laundrette on campus late at night and just chill out with a book/magazine. Easily pleased, me!

You know, reading this thread has made me quite sad.

I always wanted to be a teacher and my grammar school had high hopes of me doing just that but my family couldn't afford it, in fact my Dad anounced that he had got a job for me as an apprentice in the print and I was expected to add to the family income.

Spent years going to night school to get more qualifications, then got married and needed to earn money to buy a house.

Got divorced which almost left me in penury and then found someone else and got married again. Same process to start a new home. Became a Dad myself and now I find myself at 58 suddenly reading these posts and missing what could have been.
