Dont do the booze, pretty sure it makes things worse! Gaviscon is great though. Hope you feel better soon
think i can live without the alcohol lol ... anyway haven't got any of that either .... pretty useless really .... it's not something i've ever suffered with really except when pregnant
Remegel are quite good, I can't stand Gaviscon either - know what you mean about the texture. Milk of magnesia is my fave but watch out for its other effect!!
I'm on Omeprazol for life it's an acid inhibitor, long story, anyway best thing for acid reflux or heartburn are believe it or not ginger biscuits, they are actually recommended eating during pregnancy

I get it more as I get older and hot water does it for me. Half way through a cup I find the wind moves! Gaviscon also helps. I spilled a drop on the kitchen top once and forgot it was there. It lifted off like plastic! Scarey!
i have now picked a range of herbs, cool that i'm actually using some rather than just staring through the window at them, i made a mint and lemon balm tea, (tastes ok with honey) managed to get some gaviscon tablets from the corner shop, ok, they aren't quite as bad as the liquid but still totally gross and did work enough to let me get a couple of hours sleep...... i also went to town, so i'm well armed in case i get it again tonight ...... i have some zantac, bicarb, peppermint cordial and some ginger, to make some gingerbread men with (couldn't find any cider vinegar) ...... if that lot doesn't work, i think i'm in trouble lol ...... why can't heartburn remedies come in nice flavours oh and i've given the activia to next doors kids(hope it doesn't kill them) ...... think i'll stick to making my own yoghurts.

that's just gross lol ...... it really is evil stuff, think it's actually designed to scare the heartburn away forever
Lynda - have read the suggestions and can't add anything better except.......
Make sure it IS heartburn - especially if the severity has you worried. Could be nothing more than just that but possibly early signs of something a little more worrying. You've also had a very nasty shock in recent weeks and perhaps it might be the body reacting? I think its worth a visit to the quack if it troubles you over the weekend as well.
i'm at the doctors on tuesday anyway, so i'll mention it to her,(that'll be another 20 pages worth in my file lol) i'm hoping it was the activia, never had it before,(never will again) and never had heartburn this bad, anyway will definitely keep an eye on it, fingers crossed it doesn't come back tonight ..... didn't get it at all during the day yesterday, so thought it was a one off till i woke up in the middle of the night.
I used to have a 'herbal remedies' book, and most of the spices that go in a curry are anti-indigestion remedies. They used to say that the spices were to cover the taste of 'off' meat, but I reckon they were to counteract the inevitable indigestion......
Heartburn has one of 2 causes, acid, or gas. Bi-carb, or the 'fizzy' remedies (ENO. Andrew's, etc) will tackle either kind, otherwise you need to know which you are sufering from.....
I seem to get the gassy sort these days. ANYTHING with bubbles has some chance of curing that (including champagne<g>).
For the acid kind, don't lie down too soon after a 'rich' meal (high-protein foods are bad, so is fat), eat earlier or rest 'sitting up' for a while. That is where the 'chemist remedies' come in, because they contain substances which chemically react with acids. More reliable to remove the cause.

ditto on the omeprazol, due to a weak valve muscle , tis a pain, you can get gaviscon in tablet form which is much nicer than the gloop.
Nooo, that can't work. Heartburn is too much acid - don't add more.
Oddly enough, it might work very well. Heartburn is STOMACH acid getting in the wrong place. A milder acid like cider vinegar, coming down the food-tube (I can't spell oesophagus) might signal the body to reduce its acid production. It is proteins, fats and a few other items (inluding coffee and alcohol) that stimulate excess production of acids in the stomach.

Lynda, there is a bug going round (I work in a school) and was sent home last week. I thought it was bad heartburn also. Gaviscon double action (something like that) really helped. I was in agony and I am rarely (touches wood) off sick. Felt really sick also. Pain, apart from in the stomach and upwards was really bad under my ribs, didn't settle for 2 days really although I went back to work the next day. We have sent lots of kids home with stomach pain recently (a few have been sick) but kids do that anyway don't they. Hope you feel better soon.
