Re dogs fasting one day a week - I heard that too, and was wondering about it, but he's got to have food with the antibiotics. It's certainly worth considering after the course has finished.

He was caught eating cat poo this morning, so I guess I'm just going to have to keep the old sod on a lead instead of letting him roam the garden. He'll also eat rabbit droppings and any other poo he can find.

    Ho hum...

wolves only fast cos they can't kill food every day, thats the same reason that dogs gorge if they get the chance, its in the instinct, not knowing for sure when they will next eat. there is no real medical reason to fast a dog at all unless he is ill, becuase we know he WILL eat daily.

I noted in one of your posts Glutton that you're thinking of adding potato. This is one veg I wouldn't give to a dog, especially if he's prone to upset, as it's a veggie that's very high in starch. Raw potatoes also can have a high amount of ethene in the green bits, which is not good for us OR dogs!

Oh and I agree entirely Bride about the dog fasting thing. No need to do it at all. At one time I've no doubt that my ancestors missed meals or even a fully day when times were hard, but I'll be darned if I'm missing out on tonight's veggie lasagna!!

The latest course of antibiotics finish at the end of the week, and he's back on his regular food as per the Vet's instructions. All OK so far.

regarding the starving one day a week, originally wild dogs would kill and gorge themselves to bursting, so they can digest at their leasure, pet dogs however are fed a rationed diet, ie the amount they need to keep them the right weight etc. so by removing food for one day a week, you would have to let the dog gorge the day before as much meat as he can eat, and being un-used to this, the dog would probably puke most of it anyway ...... so really it's not beneficial to the dog at all, unless you feed all the time in the 'wild' way.

would you be happy if someone said you can't eat one day a week?
