Oh I am full of bright ideas. Upon passing a conker tree on the way home I encouraged the children to fill my jeans pockets (very big ones they are too) with conkers. I had this notion they will be an invalable and fun aid for Hannahs maths practise. Well they are now all over the living room floor. I suspect I will still be finding them come January, as I try and hoover up the last of the christmas tinsel! LOL!!!

make use of them, place one conker on each window sill throughout the house and it will deter spiders -

hun, been where you are right now, and having mad ideas, and filling your days is a GOOD thing.
oh, and plant one of those conkers, i did, and have a 2 year old chestnut tree in a tub if anyone wants to pick it up!!!
no good for me, my garden is too small, although we have plans to take it up to chanctonbury ring and sneakily plant it

Bride - I had an acorn tree that I planted from an acorn when I was just a toddler (over 30 years ago). About 5 years ago my grandparents had decided that they couldnt pot it on anymore and it was getting just too big. I hunted around for a home and it eventualy went to a bonsai expert. Never have got around to "visiting" it to see how it turned out!
My days are gonna be as full as I can make them without overdoing it and getting virus after virus like last time!Tammy x x x x

I cannot resist picking up conkers when I see them. They are so tactile, lovely, smooth and shiny. Like wooden jewels (if you get my meaning). When I am gathering them I feel sure that they must be useful for something but as yet have never found a use for them. It is such a shame that they lose their lustre after a while. Iv'e often thought about varnishing some so that they stay nice and shiny but never get round to it. Then again if I did I'd still be left with the problem of what to do with them.It is the doom of man, that they forget.Comment

Just don't wash your clothes with them in the pockets! We had several loads of acorn/conker washed clothes last year courtesy of Middle Daughter - such lovely colours

How can you keep conkers looking fresh and beautiful, they dry and go dull so quickly?

A couple of years ago, just after Christmas, we looked after our 2 and a bit year old granddaughter during the day when there was chicken pox at home. She loved playing with and counting the almonds left over from Christmas which were still in the fruit bowl (they were the ones you couldn't crack without a hammer!). I found them for MONTHS afterwards - behind and under furniture that I don't normally move when whizzing the vacuum cleaner round. Shocking!Originally posted by Finedon.Dandy View Post

Hmm Yes conkers with four boys you can imagine the amount I had in my house and the arguments about who's was who's, they did play ' conkers ' with them and then came the tears when one broke and lots of ' its not fair ' springs to mind, thank god they have grown up although now its my grandsons turn, better go hunting with him to find some tomorrow. What can you do with conkers??!! Why you thread them on a bit of string and have conker fights, no matter how old you are. I have beaten all of my grandsons and Jim. I am Queen of the Conkers!!Comment
