We've still only watched a small amount of the series, but as yet I've not once heard him imply that ALL people on a tight budget eat badly?Pretty much what Strepsy said, the show's not about helping those that are already eating healthily,so it would probably be pointless including them on the show.
Also, like Piskie said earlier, when he takes on these projects,it's not all about what the camera sees but he also carries on putting a lot of his own time into seeing it through, like him or not,he knows that with his skills & fame he can make a difference & personnally I admire him for sticking his neck out, when he probably knew he'd get a lot of stick for it,when it would probably be a lot easier for him to bury his head in the sand & hope someone else took it on.

Oh no, I've got to actually watch the bl**dy programme now, instead of just giving my clever and insightful comments about it. But I warn you, if I do throw a brick at the telly, on your heads be it!

And one hint of pukka and it's going off.

As for this programme stereotyping people of Rotherham [insert any UK city of your choice] there are people out there like those shown who don't cook [for don't cook read can't be bothered] and blame it on no money - thankfully that excuse doesn't hold up here because, as gardeners, we all know how to make the best of the cheapest of produce.
there was a comment in the Metro earlier in the week, that he is releasing a book to go with the series, which is aimed at people similar to those in the series, but a £25, would any of them buy it , thats two takeaways or five packs of fags .

We stopped having chinese/indian takeaways as a treat a few months ago because the local takeaways seem to use too much salt/artificial stuff in the food - I always ended up feeling very thirsty afterwards. We do sometimes get a pizza though.

Saturday night is our 'treat tea' night where I (or my hubby) try to cook something new but simple. Last weekend I tried Jamie's posh chicken recipe that he did with the chap from the mine - the one where he banged the chicken with the frying pan! It was really easy to do, and tasted delicious, served with boiled new potatoes and salad. Would definitely recommend this dish and have requested the new book from the library to give some of the other recipes a go.
Gary Rhodes did a book a few years back called 'Great Fast Food' which also contains some brilliant quick and easy meals and this is one of my most used cookbooks.

Your name always reminds me of Bath, know what the expression coombe downer means?
Its in Milsom place. The restaurant is lovely, feels very relaxed, I did think the bar area was poorly laid out and too small though.
We had a forty five minute wait for a table but while you wait somebody comes round with paddles? of food(chilli jam, pecorino cheese, mortadela etc).
When we were seated it was a very small table for 5 people. The waiter was very helpful and friendly but was too busy to give really good service. The food was AMAZING! and very reasonable too.
I would deffo go again but not for a few months because it was ridiculously busy.

I've heard of coombe down but down know what coombe downer means - hope its not rude

I sort of get your point A&D, but I know that there are many people on low incomes/benefits who eat healthily and well, and I also know that it requires a fair amount of dedication and ingenuity. Perhaps Jamie could actually learn a thing or two from them. After all, I don't imagine he's ever had to feed a family with minimal resources for months, or even years, at a time. In some respects it might help the people the show is aimed at to relate to it, rather than dismissing it as the ramblings of an interfering Southern poofter. (Not my opinion of him, but probably the general consensus of the great chip eating Rotherham public.)
I haven't seen the programmes, being a very irregular TV viewer, but does he suggest things such as a bit of GYO in the back garden? Or perhaps even teach people how to budget, as it's not something that comes naturally to everyone. When you break it down into its component parts; the cooking, the shopping, the budgeting, understanding nutrition, then it's a huge project he's taken on and not something anyone can learn in the course of an hour a week so it's little wonder that he's becoming frustrated. Perhaps we should just look on it as the beginnings of a long-term course of education rather than a quick-fix solution.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I've always been a Jamie fan have all his books bar the new one (yet), in fact it's partly him that made me consider GYO.

I have seen a couple of episodes but from the beginning I've thought "sorry darling but I think you're on a loser there". You just can't tell some people and if there is any change it will only be temporary. Watching the pennies is easier when cooking for yourself, that's obvious to anyone with half a brain - the takeaway eejits cannot use money as an excuse.

The last couple of months have been tight for us and I've been far more creative with leftovers than I ever have been in the past (leftovers were doggie treats but no more) and my food bills have seriously dropped. Next year they will be less still, because of GYO food.

Good Luck to Jamie, at least he is trying to help but he shouldn't blame himself if he fails.

Is it the usual suspects? Fat people who can't afford fresh fruit & veg because they spend all their money on scratchcards and fags?

                            slobbish

Is this the Jamie making millions (pukka) slob, or the Hugh Fearnly-Whatnot making quite-a-bit but with less swearing hard working slob.

EXcellant!!I not seen it all yet as bedtime for the kiddies kinda took priority! But beetroot icecream sounds interesting!!(as long as eaten with plenty of caution~& floor covering~&oversized overalls!!!)Have you ever tried dying with beetroot??I guessed that as bad as it stains when you don't want it to it'd work great! But no!!Seems beetroot has intelligent/uncooperative qualities where it stains when you don't want but not when you do!!

At the risk of hijacking a thread, I think that H F-W is more of a 'people person', despite geing a bit posh. I'm just a bit more at home with his enthusiam.

Anyone who loves beetroot is OK with me, although it was Jamie who introduced me (via TV of course) to Cavalo Nero which is still producing like a good 'un. When I was on holiday and my neighbour was cat watching and therefore had the run of the garden, she tried all sorts with the cavelo, including cooking in the microwave to produce 'chinese' seaweed.
