  • Just wondered.......

Just wondered, how far are allotment holders prepared to travel/ do travel?

Ideally I would have liked mine to be within walking or cycling distance but it is approximately 5 miles from my home

I would probaly travel up to 10 miles to an allotment but after that it would not be a viable proposition

Suppose it is handy if its on a bus route also!

    Hello Snadger..
Our allotment is about 5 mins in the car away (and 4 mins by bicycle!!). More than 10 mins and it would become a bit of a trip for us. To me it should be an 'extention' of our garden - unless of course it is en route to/from work!! Every one to their own though!!

My allotment is actually joined to my house and garden so from my back door to the allotment is about 30 feet

Oooo Ugly gourd you are lucky. Ours is about 10-15 mins in the car depending on traffic and the route chosen. It's actually quicker to get home afterwards. Fortunately it is also on a bus route and cyclable so I can be a lot greener once the heavy work is done.

I took over my allotment when my dad died 7 years ago the allotments were being grassed over and the council was losing interest so I approached another allotment holder and sugested we start a association we had our first meeting and 21 people joined we then approached the council and offered to run the allotments but they have overall say (if you know what I mean) its worked really well weve reopened nearly 20 new allotments another 8 to be reopened in september 11 people on waiting list if we want water butts we put a letter forward at one of the council meetings they buy the stuff hire a digger and we set up a work party they inspect 3 times a year if a plot is messy because of a hitch in someones life we explain and they ignore it for a year to give them time to get back on track but if somebody is just taking the micky then we also tell them that and they issue letters we now have 70 members in the association and I get no gardening done because I have 70 friends that call in to borrow wheelbarrows etc and stay for a chat but whose complaining not me!!

I am totaly lazy, and an trying to sell me house at the moment to buy one with a bigger garden so that I don't need to get an allotment. I like to just walk outside every morning and evening to look at my vegies growing. I would struggle to force myself to go to an allotment, unless it happened to be within a few hundred feet of my house.

I gave up a nice one because it was too far. By the time I did the 20 minute drive, found parking and walked through to our plot it was nearly an hour before even getting there. I would love more growing space and something flat too rather than just my cliff face garden. However I get so much out of my tiny garden simply because I can nip in and out especially when I'm working from home.
I might put my name down for the allotments which are only 15 minutes walk from here though.

Mine is less than 10 minutes by foot. When my dad had allotments, they were about 25 minutes walk away.
