Greener goodbyes

In the Sunday supplement there was an article on the Green Scene. It covered Greener Goodbyes. It was absolutely facinating and I have already decided what I want now.

What am I talking about. :roll: Green funerals. I have never fancied being cremated or buried (once as a child I watched a film on someone being buried and they were still alive so it has always frightened me ) Well this covered silk screened ecopod made out of recycled paper, traditional willow coffin, and Ivy Eco coffin made from 90 percent recycled material and Arka Acorn Urn made from recycled paper. I had a discussion with my OH today and I want to be buried in a traditional willow coffin and in a woodland burial ground. Away from the crowds and in a peaceful woodland setting. I know your dead but who knows what happens after

I wondered what everyone else thinks about this

i think i'm being chucked in the wheelie bin ...... at least its free

i don't really care about coffins, they are only for the non dead people to look at ....... am quite happy with a cardboard box ...... i'll be dead, whats the point spending thousands ...... i'd rather go in a hole in the garden, it will be good for the plants.

I read that article. I agree the willow coffin looked so much nicer and is more eco-friendly than that of a traditional coffin. I would fancy that one as well. As for cremation or burial I don't much care.

I'm having a cardboard coffin, my mates are going to autograph it, draw on it or write messages on it, like they would a pot if I broke my leg. They can use coloured felt-tips if they want to make it more cheerful, that way they won't have to buy flowers imported from half way around the world. After that I'm going to be turned into useful potash and scattered around a fruit tree.

Also (hoping it's a long way off!) - does anyone know how eco-friendly cremation is? I heard they do it by a different system than they used to.

My auntie & uncle are buried here, aunt 3 years ago, uncle 18 months ago. They have no headstone though, as they're not allowed, so nowhere to leave flowers or owt.

Apparently the council HAVE to take you away if you are left in the dustbin or a bin-bag. Burial seems a waste of good growing land to me. Dunno yet - I'm not feeling too bad today so I'll defer the decision - again!

Woodland burial for me !! all paid for ! (did it when found out i had cancer, just in case).
Hubby will be next to me so our branches can touch for years to come

There's a garden cemetary right next to our allotments and I think they offer a green burial there. They plant a tree instead of a headstone.

I don't know where my OH is. I let my step-daughter have his ashes under the strict proviso that we liaised on his interral. She has reneged (illegally) on this. The original agreement was that he would be interred in the grounds of the university where he taught and we would donate a tree and bench in his memory.

I have also got the responsibility of interring my mothers ashes. Myself and the rest of the family are in general agreement on the where and how. Problem being the when and what container. Point of this post being that we want a green urn. We haven't found anything appropriate, and one of my bro's mates is an undertaker!!

She's going into her dad's grave (it needs topping up as it has sunk, not that mummy will do much) and we're adding her to the stone.

truley, mines sorted, cremate me, and then bung my ashes over Cissbury ring, or on the compost heap, i'll be dead, i couldn't care less, funerals are for the living , not the dead, i'd prefer a wake, get drunk ,eat well in my memory, and turn me back to the good earth. the Boys know what i want, and wouldn't dare do otherwise.

I always said when I was young that if I made 70 (3 score years and 10 being man's allotted span) I'd have a wake - so I could be there to celebrate my life along with all my friends. Then if I make 75 I'll have another - etc. Eventually there'll be one they have to hold without me but I don't see why I should miss all the fun!
