Madmax here. CBA to log in. So I am using Shirls' login... HW - you should hear our dog eat. Homer Simpson is nuthin' on Ludo. He snorts, slurps, howls and 'honks'. So therefore I suggest you put his tea and food in a bowl on the floor for your colleague.

Ludo hasn't managed the belch (after you with the pig...) or a fart. Yet.

The boys drive me crazy chewing with mouths open. Not only hear it, but get to see it chewed. YUK
I'm always telling them to close their mouths, Grrrrr don't get me started....
My dad would have gone mental if my sister and I had eaten food that way.

I've never encountered the noisy eater of whom this thread speaks. I'm a slow eater, who likes to make witty conversation during a meal. It makes me cringe that here in England I am always the last to finish my food. And I always bump elbows when in close eating quarters because I use the fork and knife with reverse arms to you all. Now, anyone want to have me over to lunch? :-)

the worst thing in the world for me. I have referred myself to the counseling service at work (really) because it is such a problem for me being around people eating because of the noise. apparently it is called phonophobia when it is as bad as I have it...I almost feel violent around noisy eaters and that just isn't normal!!!! so...would struggle with your colleague big time !

you are welcome in my house, although the reverse arms ( hands) does annoy me, both my children do it, they get it from their dad, who was right handed but left footed , try batting against that sort of bowler.

we talk while we eat so mealtimes are extended, food should be chewed slowly to prevent over eating, and conversation at the dinner table, combined with 'no talking with our mouth full', is good for digestion.the bumping elbows can be fixed by what my sons call 'holding knives posh', thats handles uppermost, like you would hold a pencil? rather than handles bedded in the fist, but we have a large dinning table with plenty of elbow room so you will be fine.
I hate that I cook a great meal, and people have this 'fast food' idea from resturants that turn two maybe three covers a night, that they have to eat so fast you cant have a decent conversation over the meal, i don't cook good food for it to be scarfed down at speed.

it's not even a long drive, and i can cook better than JO we have been too indocrinated into eating in the go... family meals should be the one time you all connect........ give it an hour or three, have fun, enjoy the food and each other.

OMG! A fellow eating noise phobic!!. I specifically hate the noise of people eating crisps (possibly because I can't eat them myself). I also think it's not on to have to eat your lunch at your desk.

Many companies no longer provide areas where people who take their own lunch to work can eat away from their desk. This also means that they never really get the requisite lunch break.

I make a point of having my full break, despite the imposition of my boss down from Lunnon every week. Even to the extent of hiding in my car so's he doesn't think 'cos I'm at my desk I'm back at work.

I'm a sort of reverse handed eater...mainly because I was brought up in Canada where we used to cut our food and then down knives, switch fork hands and then eat. But, during my sojourn at a Catholic School, one of the teachers took offence at this, and one dinner time - stood behind me for the whole meal - took my hands in hers and made me eat the English way - she didn't let go of my hands for the whole hour. Nice.

I also like a good chat over food - but my OH is a 'head down and shove it in' kind of eater...I've tried different tactics but it's like he sees the food and goes into a trance. Only to come out when he's got a clear plate. This drives me nuts in restaurants as I'm left eating for ages afterwards on my own with him watching me eat...I prefer to savour the food myself and enjoy every mouthful.

Me too! Maybe we should double-date

I've had major surgery on my mouth, so have no teeth on one side - it takes me twice as long to eat my food. It's a good thing, cos I don't over-eat.

But I hate eating in public - because of the missing teeth and numb lips/tongue, sometimes food & liquid falls out the side of my mouth ~ people think I am a messy eater, but it ain't my fault .

I'm a slow eater too and can't bear noisy sloppy eaters!! My ex-husband was always eating with his mouth open and this caused many grumbles from me - didn't stop him though! Crisp eating I can understand the noise, but when someone's eating Hula Hoops in the cinema I feel like grabbing the bag and poking them one by one up their nose

Hmm, I haven't done that, but my kids always knew that if they insisted upon cutting up their food then using their forks like spoons then a spoon would be substituted for the fork at all meals until they promised never to do it again. I was such a horrible mum! I can't cope with people using their knives like pens either, forcing the elbow upwards, it's just wrong!!!! I've been known to ask to be moved when eating out because I could see someone using cutlery incorrectly out of my eye corner. I have this idea that if I, as a left-hander, can manage to do it properly, then so can everyone else

To me, it is properly!!! I was taught that way, and it still feels weird doing it the 'English' way. I also eat pizza by picking up slices, and ask for Ketchup at even the poshest restaurants/hotels [esp if I'm having a eggy breakfast]. I just explain I'm Canadian and watch as the OH cringes!
