Am feeling a little apprehensive, tonight is school quine night. Quine is waht passes for winter entertainment in these here parts. Most people will know it as bingo. Start time is 8.30pm and, if last year is anything to go by, we won't be home much before 1am. That's 4 1/2hrs of solid french numbers . It wouldn't be quite so bad if the accent here wasn't so initelligible, instead of vingt (20 pronounced van) we will be subjected to 'vin-ter' and so on.
The prizes should be good though, there is a wii, lots of roquefort, a few oil changes and the odd half animal. If I can bag a food dryer I will be very happy (although half a pig would make me happier)

Wish me luck - tomorrow my brain will be fried.....

That's what you get for living darn Saaf We went to Sète (very south coast) and completely failed to understand anything - It was the difference between a "home counties" accent and a Geordie one

Still, we were told don't learn French from the Auvergnats (people living in our region) or you'll end up sounding like a farmer... not that there's anything wrong with that, you understand.

Apparently our local accent is akin to Geordie!

My OH was told he had a good local accent, and that when most English peeps speak French it sounds like they have a mouthful of very hot potato!!!!

Ch'tis as in the film (bienvenue chez les Ch'tis) The northern accent is, apparently, littered with ch and sh before and after words. Not seen the film myself, but a neighbour is very proud of his ch'tis heritage!

Along with my ummmmssss I reckon I sound a bit like a cave woman!!!!..No wonder 'Richard Gere' grinned at me

Good luck. You'll need all your concentration for such a long evening of french numbers. I wouldn't do it - but then I wouldn't play bingo in english either! However, we did spend an interesting evening last saturday at a local village where we had a lovely meal followed by a talk and film about shooting palombe. Even the french locals weren't listening - I think we all had had too much of this year's young wine from the local cave! The accent here is very strong and different (eg. pain is pronounced pin) - we have always said that it is like geordie.

Oh ye of little faith!

It finally finished at 1am....
We came home with a crate of daffodil bulbs, a local cook book, a coffee set, a griddle pan and an apperitif set (bottle of local forewater and lots of snacks). Not bad for an evening's brain fry. Thankfully we didn't get the half deer (??!!)
Looking forward to next year now.

Local accents do my head in, when on holiday I can't translate a word the French say, I have to ask them to repetez, plus lentement s'il vous plait
