My oh has sent me an email about a virus reported on cnn about a postcard from hallmark do not open even if from a friend as its the most destructive email virus sorry I dont know how to put it other than that and I am sure some computor buff on here will put the correct details

It is very likely a hoax. As is the one about the postal scam (where you get a postcard asking you to ring a number to pick up a parcel, apparantly ringing the number costs you £15. Its not true.), they tend to do the rounds this time of year near to Christmas. Just delete and don't pass on.

hoaxes become viri in their own right purely down to (well meaning) people sending them to everyone on their database - as is said above, delete and move on.

i've solved the email virus problem, by only having online email accounts, but the rule has always been in our house, never open an email attachment unless you know it's safe, ie someone told you they are sending it, and never visit a web site link off a random email, type the address in instead of clicking. not had a virus for 8 years.

It's also why I delete so called "chain emails" - quickest way to spread a virus "send this to all the friends you care about" or "send this to 10 people you love" and other such guff.

I'm wary of attachments even from people I seemingly know - I never open an attachment unless it's accompanied by explanitory text from a person I know (or if I've solicited the email - ordered goods etc).

Andi rather unwittingly welcomed with open arms a particularly sneaky one earlier in the year.(I think a lot were taken in by it!)...basically a window popped up saying x amount of threats had been found...click here to resolve now!!The crafty bit of it was that the symbol thingy*mental block what it called*,was almost identical to windows security centre one...so in the early hours an easy mistake to make~wasn't such an easy one to resolve!!

If you get one purporting to a Microsoft warning - do look carefully at the spelling. If hackers could spell they'd be even more dangerous.

The word I was earlier looking for BTW was "logo"!!!(such a tricky word to remember!!)

We have also had this warning but as I automatically delete anything I don't recognise, I don't worry! If I E-mail one friend I have to put a certain word in the subject or her computer will automatically delete it.

It is a hoax, although the link that the warning contains relates to a genuine virus.

its like the emails you get claiming to be security alerts from your bank, which most are not even from the bank you bank with, even if you do bank with the named bank never open them as even if you have internet banking your bank will never email you, its a fraudster or potential fraudster fishing for details and your email address which will be confirmed to them if you even open to read the email and if you supply any info to the link they ask you to use you give them what they want dont read just delete.
