They are saying that Palin, now she has had a whiff of the limelight, will be running on her own next time. Scares the bejezus out of me.

it is my understanding that he isn't 'black', isn't he of mixed race? not that it matters one or the other - if the man can do the job who cares what colour he comes in

He does refer to himself ad Black though Piskie. Half Kenyan, half Kansan was this morning's description. I'd say a man is what he chooses to be.

And now we no longer have to listen to McCain's dreadful Hughie Green impersonation, each time he said 'my friends', I cringed.

I am hoping that a change will now boost both economies. Barack is charming and intelligent and probably a very good diplomat. Palin is one scarey Momma I am so pleased but have to admit I am a bit worried about the near future for his safety. A handful of Americans are just OTT and may go too far.......

well five cups of coffee and I am now awake enough to post properly LOL.

It was awesome, I started off just being interested, then I was hooked, by 3 am i was shaking with tension, by 4.30 am I was dancing round the lounge, and by 5.30 the implications of the result sank in and I was sobbing alongside Jessie Jackson.
When I was born, black people still couldn't vote in America, within 3 years Kennedy had been shot, and i can just remember my parents shocked expressions when they heard Martin luther King had been assasinated.
All my adult life I have quietly fought against racism in our country, and have succedded at least in that my children do not 'see' colour,
but....to see the first black president of a country like America made me feel suddenly very humble, and I might add, OLD.
you can say a lot of things about America being a young and brash country, but when they decide to change, boy do they move fast.
40 years from no vote to president, thats history thats is, and i was there watching.

Blimey, that turned into an essay didn't it?

Absolutely. I've just "filled up" watching his speech in full. I thought McCain (who I think is a good guy in many ways) was brilliantly gracious and dignified in his speech too.

Gotta go as off to Scotland visiting sis shortly. Can barely keep eyes open though!!!

both speeches were fantastic, as For Big O's well all it needed was the soundtrack to 'independence day' in the background and I would have applied for citizenship, the guy can certainly make a stirring speech.

I have never been racist at any time in my life! I take each and every person as I find them and try my very best never to generalise or stereo-type anyone because of what colour or religion they happen to be!

I am in full agreement with Piskieinboots if a person can do a job I don't give a damn if they are sky blue pink with green spots on! I do however see this as a step in the right direction towards a more racially tolerant society and high time as well! I am a peaceful person who hates violence or upsets of any kind. Peace, Love and Unity in this world would be a blessed thing!

I've cried so much today, and celebrated in my own way with [vege] hot dogs, ketchup and yellow mustard, [large conglomerate US-based international coffee company] coffee and cinnamon twirl - and even better I got another black bin bag full of coffee ground for the lottie when I went.

We are having popcorn tonight as well; now got to US-ise what we are having for dinner pre-popcorn.

Some people on 5 Live were complaining that the BBC was giving too much coverage. One of the most important, momentous days in modern history and they want to talk about credit crunch and rising fuel bills. For goodness sake, just have a day off and celebrate something good happening for once - it doesn't happen very often. Obviously they can't see the link between one and the other. Eejits.

I would suggest a clam chowder (Buy Clam Chowder - from £2.45 - UK Delivery) and apple pie. Very seasonal and oh so yummy.
