As a non smoker I hate walking behind someone who is smoking and the fumes trail behind its horrible. Teachers should be aware of where they smoke and like hospitals not on the grounds but outside as long as its away from the school and out of site but thats a hard one. Niether of my parents smoked but both of my sisters did although one gave up in her twentys the other sadly till her death of cancer. My self, my ex OH or my husband dont smoke but two of my sons do and I wish they didnt, so this advert that kids smoke cos you do is rubbish inpart cos its peer presure from other kids.

cor i do think i should not put this being a smoking teacher who is also fat lol!!!

i do smoke outside school, when i am finished work and not right outside the school gates, i walk to my car first ! (which is a lot further up the road from school).

everyone is entitled to their opinion, he could have just had a scathing attack from one of the kids and instead of rearing up he decided to walk out and have a fag! then he gets told off for that as well, so really he cant win!

this is a no win situation really!

Teachers are supposed to be role models, like it or not.

I personally think it's awful that a teacher is smoking where the kids can see, like Two Sheds said teachers are role models. Kids are impressionable and this could easily make them think smoking is a cool thing to do as their teacher does it. He should definitely find somewhere else to smoke!

Also if kids are walking by whilst he's there they could breathe in the smoke, which is just not acceptable in my book! I hate walking behind people smoking in the street!

And size 14 is a perfectly normal size!

Well, if the pupil was under the legal age and smoking, then yes...he would be in a position to ask them to put it out.

I'm not a smoker...but I do feel that with the lack of a smoke room on the premises, they are well within their right to spend their lunch/break relaxing in whatever way they feel suits them. If smoking is the way he relaxes...then so be it. It's not ideal he's smoking right outside the school, but the lack of smoke room has some bearing on that decision.

I'm positive teachers smoking are only a VERY SMALL part of the children of today taking up such activities.

And I have to admit...I get very annoyed by people critizising smokers, etc. It's always apparently done in jest, but I'm quite sure it becomes grating.

Freedom to live....live and let live. It would be VERY different if he was slurping out a bottle of gin, or shooting up. The real problem is that with the new law (which I love...not smelling of smoke in pubs, etc) removes people's choice...so smokers find themselves with no where to go.

It's a no win situation!

No offence, but do you really believe that kids today think their teachers are cool???

The kids that attend the local school here are obnoxious....I find it really hard to believe that they sit in class thinking how cool their teachers are. I had respect for my teachers, but only found a tiny percentage of them cool...and that was 15 years ago, so goodness knows what the kids think now.

I'd be interested to see how many kids see their teachers are a role model today!

With the list above I seriously doubt Mr Joe Bloggs smoking a fag outside school is really going to affect their spiritual development or emotional wellbeing!

And inhaling a whiff of smoke as they walk past is hardly the beginning of the end! I HATE the smell of smoke, but I also know I'm not going to die of passive smoking by getting the odd whiff of someone walking past me...in front of me...etc.

Oh, the smell of stale smoke off someone who has just popped out for a cig is horrid though, isn't it? Still, it doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to do it.

I've always wondered when people 'pluralise' - how many David Beckhams, Cheryl Coles....Russel Brands are there? Have they been cloned!?

Teacher smoking is a drug-taking teacher...smoking is NO longer socially acceptable to the majority of the population.

But then of course teacher aren't seen as role models today, there is very little respect for teachers, so there is certainly little admiration of the person or the job....

Think I have to disagree with the teachers aren't cool though, I can only speak for kids I know at my local pimary school, but they have young teachers and seem to look up and respect them! However it is a small village school, so might be a bit different, I suspect everything changes when they get to High School!

I still don't think they should be smoking in front of kids, but yes a smoking area should be provided.

As I have never smoked (my mum and brother smoking put me right off it!!) I am a bit biased though...

My blood ran cold at the prospect of David, Cherly & Russel being cloned!!! I don't know why I expressed it in plural, but the point still stays the same....David, Cheryl, Russel...and the likes! Similar people, under the one brolly!!

younger kids concluded that teachers they see smoking out there (3 only out of nearly 100) are not very appealing and put them off as they look grey and ugly and they smell wierd.!

All the more reason to have them all smoking at the gates!!!

Problem solved - the grey, ugly, smelly teachers are acting as a deterrent!!
