Free Manure?!?

WooHoo!!! I'm so excited!
I emailed a local riding school last night on the off chance that they would have a pile of horse manure they are keen to get shot of.
Got a reply today saying they have loads and saying to go alone and ask for a lady there called Jane.
No mention of if they are expecting any money, but I wouldn't expect so. I'm sure they have an endless supply.
Has anyone here had experience of getting manure from a riding school. Not quite sure what to expect. I have one of those large bags which a tonne of sand or the such gets delivered in, so will use that. Hope there's no holes in the bottom.

Yes, but from the other side of the coin. We get asked quite often, and our response is YES please come and take it away (I'd never have the cheek to charge for it) although I know some people do.

The trouble that we have is that most people want it ready-bagged, clean, smell-free and can we lift it into their car so they don't get dirty - what do they want it for?

Our policy is; bring your own bags/vehicle/trailer and take as much as you want - free - but you've got to bag it yourself. After all, if you're going to dig it into the ground, what's the problem with digging it from the pile in the first place?

Take bin bags, or compost bags are better coz they're stronger - you won't be able to lift anything bigger when it's full.

If you're ever in north Essex, come and help yourself!

I wouldn't ever expect them to bag it for me and to give it away. What are some people like???
I was planning on using strong bin bags and putting them inside the large bag thing inside the boot of my car.
Never heard of compost bags before. Where do you get them from?

heavens.....dont use those compostable bags on a roll you can get in the supermarket....they are as flimsy as tissue.....i used some to shift some compost last weekend and most broke on the 1st pick up!.

the other brilliant thing for collecting manure in is those bendy buckets (about £5 from B&Q). they are the most useful thing on my allotment, worth their weight in gold.

I use those bags for life for my compost; they are quite strong and one of them full is enough to lift without any pain - and of course the bags that my compost comes as mentioned. I have had to move compost from home to lottie as the lottie compost is nowhere near ready yet...and those bags for life are great when they are coming to the end of their life. Plus, once they have holes in them you can return them [but give them a little rinse out if they've had manure in them!!!].

My dad helps at a riding for the disabled in Midlothian and spends most of his time when he is there bagging up and delivering manure. They ask for a donation from the recipient, which helps to cover the cost of the delivery and also helps to provide much needed funds for the group.
