Regarding spammers

Just a little bit of advice from someone who runs a few forums.

those posts that we all hate are a nuisance that is beoming more and more prevelant, mainly from very poor people earning a buck or two, by being sat in front of a computer, searching for forums containing keywords, and then spamming them.

i know you are all quick to report these when you see them, but would like to advise that you then refrain from commenting in the thread that you have done so.
basically, the spammer isn't going to read your comment, it has no effect on them at all, but... it can make it harder for the moderator to clean up the thread, so as not to leave it looking strange when the spammers post has been removed, plus it ressurects old threads, which although some might be worth it ( i enjoyed the dirty carrot), can be confusing when they are a year old.

just my two cents worth, on behalf of our hard working mods. Hope I am not out of order.

I just put "spammer reported" on the thread so that other Grapes don't waste their time reporting them also.

only for the reasons stated above, means the mod has to delete your post as well, or leave it with an odd looking comment.
i just never bother, cos i know how long it takes to clean up dozens of threads when they have been spammed like this.

mods have tools where they can delete all posts by the spammer at once, but then they have to clean up the rest by hand.

I just click on the little triangle (top right) of the offending post and leave it at that. That's what you're saying, isn't it, Bride?

Some of the old resurrected threads are well worth the re-read, tho'!

Of course it's not a big deal and Grape's vigilance is much appreciated but yes, not commenting does make it quicker and less confusing to sort out.

i usually put reported on the post, so mods don't get inundated, with people reporting it, then when the spammer has been removed i go back and remove my comment so the post disappears.

yep, as seahorse says, it just makes it quicker her end to get rid of all the rubbish, so the thread still reads right.

Ditto!!I'd've thought it makes the mods jobs easier than as Lynda says get inundated with us all reporting the same post??If wrong then I'll stop??

I also just report it - after reading the resurrected thread as I often learn a little when I do. I used to put a 'reported' post but Seahorse PMed me that she had removed my post to stop confusion and I don't do it anymore. Apart from the time I learnt something substantial and put a proper comment in about it.
