Hi everyone - it's been very interesting to read everyone's thoughts and ideas on the "spy in the bin" issue. I think we all agree that each of us ought to take responsibility (including packaging firms and supermarkets) for recycling their rubbish as much as poss. If anyone is interested, especially for those of us in South Ribble, there was an article in last nights Lancashire Evening Post - you can read it on their website at: www.prestontoday.net. I rather suspect that this issue will continue for sometime, both locally and nationally. I look forward to hearing from other Grapes as to their experiences, thoughts and ideas. Dexterdog

We were told by our Council Croydon that they had bugged the bin. Before they were delivered. But this was to make sure that the contractor had emptied them all?...emmm.

They are making a great effort to recycle. We have 3 recycle bins. One was issued but not big enough so when I phoned they delevered two more. They now collect Paper, Tins, Glass, Plastic and Cardboard. And attempt to collect garden waste....if I don't get there first ( I have very hungry compost bunkers).

On the point of Manufacturers and this is the only bit of East Germany that was any good was if you purchasd something they overcharged you 10%. Once you returned dthe packaging you got your 10% back. If you forgot you got a knock at the dorr and they packaging was collected you were given a gypsys and you lost the 10%. If you had misplaced the packing when they called you were in for a bad day.

The up point was people unboxed the item in the shop and left the packaing there.......a great idea.

"They" do now, EU waste recycling directives now make manufacturers responsible for recycling their products, hence price increase on the way from car, fridge, TV .... makers.

Had a hunt around my bins and was really disappointed to find nothing other than pupae and smelly bits!
Was so looking forward to writing to our local paper!!
On the up side...had no water for the past 3 days (8-6pm) as United Utilities have replaced our mains water supply using plastic pipes instead of corroding metal Victorian pipes ( mineral suppliment now needed and copious amouts of Guiness to restore iron levels me thinks)
oh oh....restrain me please...just had the urge to click on Alan Titchmarsh Veg Seed advert......(distracting isn't it!!!!)

Hi nog - at least your local council delivered your extra boxes for you. I rang and asked but I have to go down to the council offices to collect them. As I work 40hrs a week there is no way I can get down there when they are open. I've started to use my own boxes. My friend who has just moved to Switzerland for a year says they have lots of mini recycling centres in convenient places for people to pop their stuff into every day. If they have stuff they want collecting they pay 68p for a certain type of rubbish sack which is then collected. sounds good to me. dexterdog

Here in Medway (Kent), we can't recycle most things due to the recycle plant doesn't take all recycable products.
we can put in our small blue bin paper, plastic milk bottles, newspapers, I got compliants when I put in yogurt pots even though they have the recycling logo on them.
we do get a brown wheelie bin for garden waste but most of mine goes in the compost bin.
i feel that a token effort is being made here and when will they start to take this seriously

I see Sainsburys have started using recyclable packaging, I presume the others will follow But will manufactures follow suit and stop using polystyrene for packing. I say stop using window envelopes Start the revolution!!!!

Hi Bootie - yes, I heard that on the radio as well - lets hope this is the start of the recycling revolution! I also heard a quote from a chap at asda saying well done, we need to catch up - fingers crossed!
As for recycling of items eg. marge tubs, yog pots etc - our council doesnt take them either, so have started to keep them in a separate bag and will drop them off at the recycling centre when I have enough. dexterdog

Looks like those nice councils across the country, who said that the chips in our bins were to make sure they could be returned safe and sound to their owners - are, surprise! surprise! going to start charging us for the waste we throw away!
Yes, they say they are going to reduce our council tax bills - wow! by how much, one wonders! and then start charging us per bin! Just another way to make us pay more methinks! DDL

That's what will happen - flytipping all over the country - they'll soon change their minds when the country's overrun with rats and vermin (and I don't just mean the government )

We in Ireland are now charged for our rubbish collection. In the council area you have to buy tags from the council and attach one to the handle with the weekly date on or they won't be emptied. In the corporation area we pay a yearly fee for the privilage. they are also going to start billing us by the weight of our bins.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
