If you haven't yet paid that daft price yet, there is an alternative: most market places and high streets will have somewhere that you can take your phone and get it unlocked. Done it a few times and last time it cost me about £7 (prices can be very different through). It's completely legal and only takes about 10 minutes.

this can depend on how 'new' the model is though, and whether the unlocking codes are out yet for that model, another way the networks have been getting round this.

I had to wait six months for one of my phones to be done due to the code not being out.

most of the really popular makes come out pretty quick tho.
