  • I know a lot of people like autumn

    ...but everything looks rubbish!

My lawn is covered in leaves - and as soon as I rake/sweep them up it's covered again. All the flowers are now dead - there's just some green bits left that never flowered. The ground's sodden. The patio, when not covered in leaves is as slippery as a frog smeared in Vaseline. The greenhouse is virtually empty.

On the plot (I had a quick look today), is boggy and there's very little growing - apart from some brassicas and celeriac.

    Everything just looks/feels soggy. Damp.

Now I don't usually like to feel down, but I'm feeling a bit autumnal as a result.

    Come on the spring!!

Come on HeyWayne, it's not like you to be down. We might get some nice dry days later on, then you can get out there. Even a winter garden looks better for a little sunshine.

Put your feet up this evening and have a good look through the seed catalogues. Always cheers me up.

My countdown widget informs me it is only 36 days to the longest night, and then it will be spring!!!

            36 days isn't long.

And look at the gorgeous leaves, and I saw a goldfinch on my feeder today in a ray of sunshine.

My primroses are flowering, the tubs containing winter pansies, cyclamen and ornamental kale are a lovely splash of colour, and there are self sown calendula seedlings poking their heads though all over the place. The numex twilight chilies in the greenhouse are covered with purple, cream and orange fruit and the lemon tree is coming into flower since moving inside.
Yes, the leaves are falling from the trees, but this gives me a good idea of what will need pruning later on when it's time. The buds on the camellias and rhododendrons are swelling with promise of a good show next spring and the winter flowering jasmine is already in flower.

Go on, look closer, I'm sure you will find a lot worth looking at, and if you don't, plan what you can do, so that this time next year you see something to cheer you in these grey months
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Aahhhh..you're suffering from 'Am ready to be a Daddy NOW' syndrome'!!!

ya just gotta wait me lad!!

Say how do to 'Little Bean'...and get on with sorting out a patch in the garden for him/her. Babies love colour and when old enough to grasp- love grabbing hold of flower heads!!!( stick them in a vase for LW)

Enjoy your time with LW..this time next year you won't recall a night in infront of the fire...or a quiet night out at the pub
