I presume she's the only Japanese exchange student in the area??? If not- maybe worth inviting a couple of the others over to chat and cook with her??
Is there a Uni near you where there may be other Japanese students- OK 3 yrs older..but just a thought that she may be relieved to hear Japanese spoken for a change ( I know what a relief it can be to hear English for a change- esp when I'm tired!)
I know she's here to learn English...but there's no harm is there in a restbite???

Maybe there is a Japanese community of ex-pats she could meet up with- who could explain a few things for her/you??..or meet their children?
24 hrs a day is certainly one way to learn a language, but it certainly makes the old brain cells frazzle!

Unfortunatly she is the only one in the immediate area, and the area rep frowns on them contacting each other in any case , unless it is a get together he has organised.
They are not allowed visits from family, and he told me to limit her internet access, but I haven't so I know she 'talks' to friends and family on msn in Japanese, as she has her own laptop. She also phones her Mum on her mobile.
Only prob was, when she couldn't connect to the internet, I couldn't understand the messages. which made sorting it out interesting
I do feel for her, which is why I do not insist she spends all her time with us, and to be honest, it is nice to get a bit of a respite too. I try to talk slowly and clearly (not loudly ) to her as she said one of her main problems was when people talk too fast, but when we are together as a family, it is harder to remember. When my sons are home for Christmas she will probably be totally bewildered when they start teasing DD.

I had chinese students for a month, lovely girls, but only 12, what a nightmare, rinsing hair down the loo ( using water from the sink) washing clothes in the bath, flooded my bathroom , water coming through the ceiling, homesick, wouldn't eat english food, even though i asked them everyday what they would like. see they are told to eat our food, but its a real culture shock for them, we compromised, they had their own noodles, ooodles of them from home in their cases, and sachets of sauce for it, it was all they wanted, so they would bring it down and do it themselves, so i knew they had eaten.
they did eat fish, but not battered or breaded, they like salmon best, and clear soups, almost stock really with a few veg in or maybe some shredded chicken. They do not eat a lot of meat at home, so they are kinda taken aback by meat and 2 veg everyday.
just stick with it, noodles and rice are easy and cheap to do, the vacum packed chicken is because they KNOW its safe to eat, fresh chicken over there is not as hygenic as ours.

I'd recommend finding the 7p 3 minutes noodles rather than egg noodles; some stock cubes and let them choose their own sauces. The noodles are prepared by just pouring boiling water on them, and then you add the stock as a sauce. I lived off them when I had no money.

thats exactly what my chinese girls had brought with them, they are pretty easy to get hold of too, most supermarkets have them.
