  • Lights for cacti and succulents?

Hi. I got my kids some cactus and succulent seeds and planted them before Christmas. A couple of shoots are showing and I now realise they are not getting much light at all.
I am using a small heated propagator and don’t have any window sills deep enough so until the weather gets warmer and I can put the propagator in my garage, I am wondering. If I need any grow lights to help the seedlings along?
    Don’t want to spend much!

Hi Raps, I used to grow loads of the darn things at one time, but I had a propgating bench and 12x8 greenhouse at my disposal. that said I know a friend of mine used to grow his in a small fishtank and a desk lamp with a daylight bulb in ... you can make a 'propagator out of a cardboard box lined with either tin foil or those emergency blankets they use at places like marathons and mountain rescue - both shiny side out

You don't need to pot them on for some time as daft as it sounds. I used to sow them in 2" square pots and they would be think in there before I potted them up.

Pot up into a JI No2 and add extra grit it will be easier to water them than a soilless compost and in the spring mist them ofer first off till they start growing properly then you can start watering them. Year 2 give them a week feed( 1/2 or 1/4 strength) od something like tomato feed as you don't want them soft and sappy growing

      Thanks Nick.
I'll see if i can find and old desk lamp and use that with a daylight bulb.

I didn't realise how long they take to germinate - none of the cactus seeds and only a handful of the succulent seeds have sprouted after 6 weeks in the heated propagator. Was planning to start with the propagator soon for getting the fruit and veg started for the spring...

Well, months later and still no succulent seeds have germinated!
Three of the cactus seeds have germinated, approx 15 mm high. I wouldn't mind mt propagator back! So can I pot up these little cactus seedlings?
And should I give up with the succulents? 10 months with no germination.
