Some of our ancestors lived in the Victorian slum area of Narrowmarsh (at the base of Castle Rock in Nottingham). Early photos of the area often have milk churns on the ends of streets which apparently held drinking water taken from the Rivers Leen and Trent. The Trent had already flowed through heavily populated areas such as Stoke, Burton etc. so had picked up plenty of sewage before Nottingham added its own.
I have a copy of Eliza Acton's book "Modern Cookery" published 1868, in which she often says to boil a pan of water and remove the scum from the surface before adding the veg. First time I read it I did wonder if it reflected on the quality of available water..
