I feel for you too Dig. I was made redundant in June. As far as I was concerned it was the sort of thing that only ever happened to other people, not me. I just lost all motivation.

My Husband has been great, and is letting me pick up little gardening jobs locally, but there's not a lot around this time of the year, so lack of money is a problem. I'm having the time of my life learning about Veg. growing, digging my beds, planning my Polytunnel (a freebie from a friend), spending more time with my Horse. My lovely chooks that I've had for three weeks are always pleased to see me, and I waste hours chatting with them (I probably am potty), I can't envisage going back to full-time employment, but I'm not ruling it out.

Sorry, I'm rambling again - it's a lovely day, so I'm going to go and do some digging.

      Chin up!

Thanks for all your support, I have decided (well almost!) to leave my trade altogether.
I am 58, quite fit, (I run the Great North Run in 2 hours 2 mins) and I have a passion for gardening (mainly veg) My youngest sister is a member of the Royal Horticulture Society, and my eldest sister is a gardener. I have picked up enough pay to see me through until end of March 2009 and OH has a great job - so it's goodbye print and hello gardening and fencing (no not that type ) I can still freelance design work to top up the coffers. This is the third time I have gone through this in two years and now enough is enough. I'll keep you posted.

Chick, this may be just what you needed to kickstart something new and enjoyable and exciting. Think positive and make the most of it.

We're living under the threat of my OH losing his job but we're not thinking about it until and unless it happens. Sounds as though you have your alternatives well planned, good on you!
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance

My dad and I started our gardening business around 10 years ago when his job was taken over by a computer...It's a really good way to earn a living, very enjoyable and good for you too! Plus boozey christmas tips! Good luck, it can take a while to get going and for the first year you can't be too fussy with what you are willing to do...but it's worth sticking at!

so sorry to hear that, it's never a good time is it, but as everyone else has said, maybe now is the time to turn your hand to doing something that you really enjoy. i would love to be one of the fortunate few who can make a living out of a hobby, now maybe your chance. good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Awful to be made redundant but it sounds like it might have a silver lining for you. Hope you get your new career up & running & enjoy what you're doing.
