  • Ornamental cabbages in a bouquet?

    What do you think.

Himself and I are getting hitched in July and to keep costs down, my mum and I are doing the flowers ourselves. I'm going to grow what I can, but in case I'm rubbish at growing again, I've been looking at getting the flowers from a local supermarket/market and making the arrangements from them.

Point is, I saw some lovely bunches featuring ornamental cabbages in Sainsburys this morning, and while I think they looked lovely, theres a pretty good chance my mum may just think I've lost the plot.

Steve and I are trying to put personal touches in everywhere we can, for example this on the cake, cos he loves fishin
    Gone Fishing Cake Topper

any thoughts? is it a naff idea? (cake or cabbages)

The ornamental kales are really beautiful - they look like massive exotic roses - but be warned, they smell like school cabbage after a few hours! Brassicas they are and brassicas they smell like!

I had some in a couple of bouquets bought for me last month and they really did look stunning. I've seen them before in various coulours and I wouldn't mind growing some myself. Haven't seen any seeds in the catalogues so does anyone know where I can get some?

Mrs P broke a rib at our bonfire party (slipped on wet decking and set off a fire extinguisher with her left... ahem)

Anyways, her boss sent her a lovely bouquet of flowers and they contained ornamental cabbage. They (still) look really good, I think it will be a fabulous effect.

I think ornamental cabbages would look fabulous! They're just as beautiful and colouful as many traditional bouquet items and would, I think, mean more to you than some anonymous supermarket blooms!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom

I've come to take you home."

              Guys, thank you!!

The ones I saw were white coloured and in a bunch with some roses and nice greenery. I just hope they are still on sale when I need them to be!

Nope. Its taken us nearly 10 years to get to matrimony, and he likes fishin. thought it would give our family and friends a bit of a laugh when they see it. When I suggested it and showed him, he loved it.

I think the cake topper is fab. At the weekend I bought my sons girlfriend some flowers for her birthday containing cabbage flowers and they look stunning.

I love the cake topper. My hubbie is mad keen on the fishing too, I wish I had seen that before our big day. I hate ornamental cabbages in general but I reserve judgement until I see a photo - I think you should go with your instincts Kirsty! I got married in a gorgeous turquoise 1940s ball gown and I felt like the belle of the ball. Himself got married in a gorgeous cream aran jumper handknitted on the Isle of Lewis - he would have looked totally wrong in a suit, it was OUR day and we wanted to do it OUR way. If you like it, stick to your guns!

Edited to add: Just seen your cake topper on ebay - I think you've found a bargain!!

I think it's a great idea...would deffo be unique!!(& with regards to Flum's concerns about the smell....make sure someone you're not so keen on gets to catch it when you throw it!!...but I can imagine it would become quite smelly...suppose it depends on what you plan to do with it after...My mum made a last minute little boquet for me...I dried it & still have it framed in the bedroom.
Oh & the cake topper is brill!
(Now wondering if chooks can eat ornamental cabbage???It could be your little gesture to get them included on the day!!)

The bouquet will not be thrown. My FIL died suddenly in May, and Steve and I are planning to take the flowers to his headstone the next day, and spend a few minutes with him. I'll make up a little posy for throwing.

Mentioned to mum, doesn't think I'm mad at all - what a result!!
