Erm, general chit chat is just that. General, not nec garden orientated or anything to do with gardening at all.

As Nicos said, it always goes a bit quiet on the growing front come the autumn, bar those desperate to grow something to quell the "gardening itch.

Having to read most of it however certainly highlights those who need to get out a bit more, the slightly wierd and the totally barking members on this site, which is nearly all of us.

But isnt that what makes this site so great, its not pretentious or stuck up its own bottom, just full of great peeps brightening up each others day, waiting for the starting gun to get sowing seeds again.

I may well have been the person guilty of the original comment as I definitely remember posting something earlier in the year that I was finding it quite sad the the site was becoming less and less of a gardening forum and had become more of a social club. Funnily enough I almost posted something on the Facebook thread the other day that I was all for it if it moved some of the general chat off this site but realised that I didn't really mean it like that and that it would come out wrong in print. I suppose it depends on what you do with your life, I already get the odd funny e-mail on my work account and find that most of the ones posted on here were ones I'd already seen so now rarely click on those. I read a few pages of the Gardener's Rest thread and actually found it quite cliquey (is that how you spell it) so haven't been in since, it's not somewhere I would feel comfortable posting. Enjoy the odd discussion on social issues but rarely get involved in the ones where people laid themselves bare as it's not really my thing. Probably coming over as a killjoy and am certainly not telling people what they should or shouldn't post but do find it strange that somebody should join a gardening forum and then post quite high numbers of only gardening posts. Probably not explained well, not meant to be critical to any individuals on here, just trying to show a difference of opinion. I await the critism to my views!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I love visiting the Vine. People soon made me feel as though I belonged when I first joined. OK we don't always talk about gardening related topics but we aren't in the garden or on the lottie 24 hours a day, are we? We do have other interests and it is nice to know what other members have been up to.

Carry on posting. (Syd James, Barbara windsor and co weren't in that one).
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

I am not even going to ask which category i fit into.
but......... and it's a big but, this is a community, not an informative wiki, and as a community, its made up of all sorts, some serious, some seriously mental some that can easily do both depending on what they are drinking , it is a microcosm of life and thats why it works so well.
I don't think anyone here is pointing fingers, but some people are less used to the rough and tumble of forum life, and may feel a little insecure when others comment on the amount of nonsense going on, and those others may feel bad for saying so, they may have other outlets for that sort of fun, and no doubt do.
noone needs to worry though, this is a friendly and FUN site, even when it is discussing serious stuff, it has enough forums to please everyone, you never need to go into one that doesn't interest you, and for the majority, well we just like the WHOLE flavour of the site and run lunatic around it being chased by the poor moderators trying to keep us under control ( well we have to give them something to do!)

I don't doubt that come spring it will all turn serious, and all through summer will be quite whilst we spend more time doing it than talking about it, for now....its dark, and cold, and i have dug everything diggable, mea culpa!

Didnt come over as critical actually, just your opinion

Great believer in each to their own, and as Bride said there are enough forums on here for everyone to be accomodated.

i love the fact that i can look and ask about gardening, general chit chat ( i think general means nearly everything) i know my gardening calender differs to most but i still join in and if we can only talk "garden" i dont think this site would be what it is....with all the personallities , the variety of topics etc make it a really enjoyable place to visit so thanks GYO xx

lol, i had this vision this summer, remember all those lil houses on bamboo supports?

well imagine 18inch deep trays on tall supports, just the right height for not having to bend down, with lil thatched roofs on them and a good pair of fishing waders !
