  • Technical help please

I have a new computer running Vista - it really struggles to load GYO page and if it does it takes eons to load and then keeps dropping out.

I have ZoneAlarm AV and FW

I have allowed GYO as a Trusted site (made no difference)

All other forums, web pages load at normal expected speed and do not drop out

None of you are experiencing this so it is a local issue not a GYO problem, but it is driving me bandy and I may even have to stop posting cos I almost have no hair left

Any ideas at all? What have I missed?

Ben, can you come around please, I have left your details at the Main Gate so that the man with the gun lets you in... thanks

I'm on Vista as well and though there are alot of times when it is very slow to load the thing that gets my goat is the advert at the top which loads and then you have to scroll down to see what has been posted, then you hit on one you want to read and hey ho there is the advert again and you have to scroll down. I know adverts make money but isnt there a way to show them without having to scroll down. I never read them and I dont know anyone who does. Sorry rant over.

one thing is for certain, you should NOT have more than one anti-virus on the machine, pick one, AVG is the best, and stick with that and remove the others, they conflict with each other.

i only have avg ....... which is turned off in between scans cos i can't be bothered with it popping up ....... the last time i had a virus was in 2004 when i was on dial up and son was trying to find porn sites ...... before that, never had one since i stopped using outlook express ....... i never let emails onto my pc the only thing i have running constaltly is the windows firewall thing, and spyware blaster, and there wasn't a problem with any of it till a couple of weeks ago.

                      Download IE7Pro

not sure how much difference it will make, but it does what i need.

                      there is also this:
                      http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-20468.html

which i use a lot when gaming, it shuts down everything that vista is running in the background which you dont actually need, make the machine run a LOT faster

I think you'll find it's nothing to do with your computers. It's more likely that we are (again) under attack from "spammers". This always slows down speeds as there are loads more "people" using the site at the same time.
                        Don't quote me, though.
Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.

Madmax here - Good on yer boy lynda66!! A good red blooded male.

AVG is one of the best AV programs about - but it is RAM heavy. Use AVG 8 free. get rid of ZA firewall. If any of you have a wireless access point and router/modem this piece of kit has a built in hardware firewall anyway. You will not need any s/w firewall. Most are not compatible with network drives, mapped drives or network printers anyway.

NOD32 is another good AV program. Very lightweight on system resources.

Also check the RAM availability - Firefox places a load on RAM... Try Google Chrome as a browser. IE7... Nasty...

We have 4Gb RAM on Shirls' machine and I have set the paging file (swap space) to 1.5x the physical RAM available.

Outlook Express is a magnet for viruses. Use Thunderbird or Outlook 2K3/7.

                          Good luck.
                          Happy Gardening,
                          Shirley

I think the common denominator here is Vista! No problems with my wind-up steam version of XP!
