Doves--Birds of Peace?

Just sitting here before going to work and as usual the birds are down at the feeding table.

There are about 10 collared doves that visit but they spend more time squabbling and chasing one another off than they do feeding.

Don't seem to peaceful to me!

Doves are NOT peaceful creatures. They don't have formidable weapons, but that it EXACTLY why they can be as nasty as they like without wiping their species out. Wolves have built in 'rules' about fighting (a wolf won't injure a cub from its own pack, etc) because if their petty squabbles turned to real fights, there would soon be none left.
If you can find a copy of "King Solomon's Ring" by Konrad Lorenz, it gives a lot of insight into the reality of animal minds and manners.

we used to have a colared dove ...... dead cute, but so flipping noisy ....... he got on well with the budgies though

We aren't allowed to keep pigeons on our allotments but one guy has got round this by keeping white pigeons (flying rats!) and calling them doves.

They still peck the brassicas and we now have some interestingly coloured woodpigeons as well

'pet' pigeons are 'rock doves' (same species as the ones that scavenge in towns), Woodies are another species, but then birds seem able to breed across related species........

We have 2 of the collared variety , they sit side by side on the top of the rose arch and deposit guano in a pile underneath it!
