  • We used to scoop out swedes on Halloween, ready for bonfire night. ( used the nightlight to light sparklers)
Boy did we get blisters using the spoons to hollow them out
Never did anything else for Halloween either.

I have cloth ears when it comes to music. Had a year of piano lessons, a year of guitar and of course the compulsory recorder lessons en mass at junior school where most of us just hummed into the mouthpiece!
My OH is musical so we made sure our children played. Daughter played violin from age 4 then at secondary school decided to play the oboe and sing. Son played the flute and saxophone. Cloth ears me ( that sounds very northern doesn’t it?)

    • I have just realised that my mother must have been a glutton for punishment between me unhappily practising the piano and my next youngest sister practising the violin, a sound akin to a serious cat fight. Looking back I'm sure my sister picked the violin deliberately just to annoy everybody.

        • Afternoon all.
Had a productive morning weeding out grape hyacinths. I've only done half one small bed and removed a bucket and a half of the blooming things. My word they know how to spread themselves about! And they are a nuisance 'cos I can't put them in the compost as they lurk and then grow when the compost is spread. I'll have to take them to the tip to be recycled.

Lottie, lots of people give pianos away for free, if you can collect one. Here's one site to look at -

We don’t do anything at Halloween apart from watching a film at home, but we have sweets now any leftovers will go to a friends grandkids.

Spent the afternoon in the garden it’s just starting to cool down of time for tea and a biscuit.

            • Any advice? When I went out to grab my washing at about 5pm when I suddenly realised that it was just about dark and it wouldn't dry any more there was a young cat sitting outside under my porch on my doormat. It ran away. When I had grabbed the washing it had reappeared but then immediately ran away. I have just opened the door again and it was back. I put a bowl of milk out and it ran away again...
but I have left the milk there. Presuming that maybe it is trying to adopt us and is at least semi-wild has anybody got any advice??

                • Good evening, as it was dry this morning I walked up the town for some messages and while out I met several friends that hadn't seen for a while so spent a bit of time catching up, and discussing things, evedently discussing and not bletherin, as its women who do that once back home, a quick bite then had to go and pick up one of the grandsons and take him to the hospital, he burnt his hand last week so needed to go for a checkup, he has a slight infection, so had to go to the hospital pharmacy, which meant sitting about for quite a while, Finaly got home by tea time after tea I was out in the greenhouse for a time, as there are only a couple of children in the area there was no guises going about. Enjoy your day tomorrow and pass on some smiles. Goodnight

                  • Evening!
gf…I think I’d presume it might be a neighbour’s cat which is exploring its new neighbourhood…. unless it’s looking very young?
                    Probably worthwhile asking around tomorrow?
If it does keep coming back to you and you can catch it, then pop it in a box and take it to a local vet to see if it’s been chipped.
Many years ago I had a similar experience with a beautiful young cat which was timid but clearly very hungry.
It turned out not to be chipped but the local vets were in contact with each other and someone had left a description of their missing cat with their vet.
She’d wandered about 1/2 mile away from home and clearly had got lost.
Owning cats myself I had cat food to leave out for her . You could buy some dried cat food tomorrow and leave it out with some water?
Many cats are intolerant of cows milk and although they love it , it can really upset their tummies. Water is always the best option tbh.
If it’s not chipped and no one is looking for their beloved pet, would you be tempted to give it a home?

                      • Morning. Another grey and wet day. Yesterdays weather forecast for today said mainly dry with sunny spells which is why I planned washing the bedding today. This has now changed to mainly rainy with a few sunny/dry interludes. Much as I love my new brushed cotton bedding it does take a lot more drying but if I let it have a good blow I can get away without ironing it.

Last night's feline visitor has disappeared.....back to a warm home I hope. We have had a dog and cats in the past but never intentionally. They have either found us or been dumped on us. When I first met Mr GF a black stray cat, later to be named Sooty, wandered into his home one evening and sneaked into his bedroom where she promptly gave birth to half a dozen kittens in his wardrobe. He eventually found homes for all the kittens and had her spayed and she stayed.

A grory hop today and Mr GF has put another pannetone at the top of the list. Last weeks has just about disappeared.

                            • Afternoon all.

Had a very busy day yesterday cooking up a feast. Takes a lot longer to cook than to eat, that's for sure. Friends have now left, so the afternoon is pretty well my own. If I was sensible I'd do a bit of work, but it's a public holiday here and if everyone else is having a day off, it feels like I should too.

Nice and bright outside, so I shall go and masacre another million cabbage white caterpillars and do a round of watering. And then a bit of eyelid inspecting.

The smiles spent a long time here this morning before heading off. Hope they left in time to complete their rounds. Think that you, GF and Rary, are both due special deliveries in recognition of your good works.

Have a great rest of the day, everyone.

Still not used to the hour change yet. I felt really tired yesterday so thought I’d have an early night. Told OH I was off to bed to read for a few minutes and he burst out laughing …yup 8.15 pm

A quick grory hop for me - need to buy in organic things for our next guests. I have a lot anyway but not fresh fruit etc. Tis a good excuse to treat myself to a few other things too which can’t be found in other shops here.

Oh - and more ironing of course Can anyone recommend a good film to watch whilst ironing?

First things first - let’s get that kettle on!
