  • Opposite here GF - two letters, one to let me know the water bill is going up £10 a month and Council Tax by £8 a month. Might be the Town Hall steps for me

    • Flo, a long time since I've heard that, "standing on the town hall steps". I once said it to a non Yorkshire person and they'd no idea what I meant.

Does everyone else understand the meaning? Or it just a Yorkshire saying?

      • I’ve not heard that saying, but could guess as to its meaning.

        • I must admit that when, as a teenager, I first understood it's connotations, I used to cast many surreptitious glances at the steps if I was in town in the evening, to see if anybody was loitering.

My water bill has gone up the same, so I've applied for a water meter. No way do two people use £800 water per year!

            • GF I’m just over the border in Derbyshire and the ‘Town hall steps’ I’d a well known saying here.
As a teenager I worked in an office block next to the town hall and I couldn’t help looking as we passed. We never did spot anyone.

              • I've had a water meter for many years MH. It massively reduced my bill. This year is the biggest increase I've ever had

                • I could hazard a guess or two, but neither seem like something you'd do, Flo.

                          • Morning all.

Frosty and grey here. I found a rhubarb pie at the back of the freezer that I made in rhubarb season last year, so we will be having that for dessert today. Soon be rhubarb season again. The year turns fast, even if the days go slow.

                            Enjoy Sunday everyone.

                            • Mornin n’alln’all
A very light frost and only a slight breeze here today so if I wrap up well I should be able to get more gardening done today.

One fairly urgent job is to dig up a hellebore. Doesn’t sound much but the base is about 40x40 cm and closely planted with various other plants. I brought it home from a plant swap thinking it’ll be great for the bees etc. Just labelled ‘hellebore’…I hadn’t realised there were massive varieties!
Problem is, as a fully grown plant it’s about 120cm tall and even wider and completely in the wrong place .
It needs dividing then planting elsewhere so I can replant with something more appropriate for the space.
Its killed off a lot of the lawn too where it’s overhung when it’s collapsed from the weight of its flowers ( each the size of a side plate), so I want to returf that bit too at the same time.
                              Perfect day for that!

Not sure what else I’ll get up to today, but , as usual, there’s loads to get on with!

Enjoy your day peeps…and watch out for those smiles…. They were skitting around earlier, clearly up to mischief!

                              • Morning MH…Sorry- missed you there
I defrosted more rhubarb yesterday thinking the very same thing!

Fancy a brew? Toast and homemade Jostaberry jam if anyone fancies some?
