I know which way I'm doing it this year.
this was what my butcher was getting at, we paid about £20 for 3 BIG fat breasts, no waste and best part of the bird, still expensive, but worth it, for xmas.

we have a nice loin of pork to go with the venison on xmas day, that and a chicken and ham from the day before.

one thing we never stint on at xmas is meat, its the pagan in me, we use the butchers xmas club and do £1 a week, plus extra when i can, makes for a nice pile come the xmas order.

Traditional folks here. Turkey and a ham for crimbo (dad buys us a local farm reared turkey every year so I only have to get the ham). New Year dinner will hopefully be a haunch of venison (bought using barter system - I provided some car spares for the butcher and he better not have forgotten!)

Not in my family - a goose would never have the flesh to feed the family!

I thought goose because it was cheaper and easier to come by. Either way Turkey is a relatively recent thing as I understand it.

funny thing is, i've never yet cooked xmas or new years roast dinner ...... we usually have things like sausage rolls and bits of pizza, and pork pies and pasta salads and things, a nice little buffet for 2 ....... and a big choccie cake ....... seems an awful lot of faff all that worrying about what meat to eat

very much so , as far as i know, the last 40 years maybe? probrably a war thingy.

Lynda 5 years ago we didn't do xmas dinner either, the boys would rather have burgers, in fact the year their dad beggered off, i asked them what they wanted and they asked for fish fingers the eldest was only 5.
after that i just didn't bother much, cos cooking all that stuff to be told 'don't like that bleeeeuchhhh' when they hadn't even tasted it made xmas worse.

nowadays though, they can cook, so they appreciate food more, xmas has now become a cooking lesson, and a chance to try things we cant afford normally, in our house the spirit of xmas is good food.............. and booze for me

A wise choice Piskie, absolutely delicious. Remember to save all that goose fat, it's wonderful for doing roast potatoes and parsnips in. We always had goose for Christmas dinner until we started having the Hagga Bagga (mother in law) over on Christmas day. She doesn't like goose. Never tried it but knows she doesn't like it. Free range bronze turkey for us on Christmas day but like you we'll be having goose for new year.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.
