Ah, Scrabble, yes I remember... I had a friend who would only play rude Scrabble. Rude words only allowed.
If she couldn't make a genuine word, she'd put whatever word she could and then invent a rude meaning!
Sorry for hijacking the thread!
Christmas/Midwinter/Hogmanay, whatever you choose to celebrate, enjoy it, and don't let commercialism spoil it.
The last one only seems a few weeks ago, so before long it will be spring again, and we'll all be rushing around like idiots trying to get crops in the ground! All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

Bride hun, don't let it get you down!x.As Glutton just said~"don't let the comercialism spoil it".
We can't afford the Christmas that the adverts/shops tell us we can't do without....but you know what we have a great time of it anyway!!...Over the next few weeks we'll be making decorations/cards/pressies.We spend a minimal amount on pressies(although now I feel hypocritical as I had a little money from my Grandma which I chose to spend on a DS each for the kiddies instead of letting household cr&p swallow it all),last year our boys pressie cost a fiver & he loved it!!As for the food shop...I buy little more than I do for the rest of the year....I have memories of Christmas's as a kid where my mum would go totally overboard & then nag when we were full to bursting, that if we didn't eat more it would all be wasted!(my thoughts are the best way to avoid waste is to not get it in the 1st place!)
Whatever/however you celebrate...don't get bogged down by the financial side of it.((((fairy))))the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

I'm a bit dithery on Christmas - love it in theory but ....
There is just me, OH and the cat but we will again have OH's Pa for Christmas, OH's siblings are away/too busy etc to have him (again). I know we will all be old one day, but he is a nasty man, manipulative and selfish - but how can you leave a guy that age on his own over crimbo - no matter how much he deserves it?!?
So - another Christmas of being bullied and nagged whilst producing meal after meal and being nailed to the back of the sofa by the TV volume (did I mention he is hard of hearing as well?) Some time on Christmas day I will be in tears.
For the last three years we have done the present thing Christmas morning and he's said 'oh, is it Christmas, I suppose I should have bought something - oh this is lovely thankyou' - oddly enough he doesn't forget to send his daughter overseas a hamper every year. Aaaaargh don't get me started. Oh you have
Anway - once the 21/22nd is out of the way and Spring is nearly here I will be happy - heart lifts after solstice. (despite the dread of Christmas). It's just knowing we're in for a miserable time again sours the entire autumn.
I know, I know we are lucky to have one parent left, some have none - but duty can make you bitter.
Deep breath ..... and thank you for listening.Nell

Glad your feeling a bit brighter Bride.
We are seeing a big bunch of our family this year so have decided like pw to do family pressies. Biccies chocs that sort of thing. Makes much more sense, most of my lot are teenagers now and the stuff they would like is prohibitive anyway.
We are just looking forward to spending the time together. Well I am, not sure about MrH but he will just have to put up with being social for one day
Even as a Christian it is sometimes flippin hard to remember what Christmas is about when battling for the sproutsWPC F Hobbit, Shire police

Best behaviour - yes that is exactly right. On a recent stay in hospital all the nurses said 'what a wonderful man your f-i-l is', well for the first two days they said that, after that they were a little less enthusiastic.
Derry isn't far enough - but other than that I'm in, anyone else?Last edited by nelliegemini; 03-12-2008, 11:43 PM.Nell

Our last few Christmas's have been hideous on the family health front - my Auntie (mum's sister) died on Boxing Day, then the following Christmas my mum was battling lung cancer. The year after that she died on Jan 2nd. The year after that (last year), Dad was recovering from a major cancer op that we didn't know if he'd survive. This year, when there is no health worries, he has decided to go on a cruise with his new ladyfriend (who seems to be doing everything possible to antagonise us girls whilst getting him to spend time with her offspring instead ) and my sisters are all staying away.
So I've decided f*** 'em, I have my own family and we've invited some friends to spend the day with us, and I will relax for the first Christmas in 4 years, even if we do end up having Spag Bol for dinner coz we can't afford a turkey/chicken!!
