Just adding my best wishes (and tears) to everyone else's!

      My thoughts are with you.

My Sister had a Setter who ate whole bag of raisins their German Shepherd had stolen from the cupboard. Same scenario, we didn't know how poisonous they were at the time. I had a friend who used to feed Grapes to her dog as a treat, I couldn't get her to believe she was poisoning him.

My old fella eats everything, as per another thread, our garden is full of toadstools and mushrooms, perhaps I should get him a muzzle for when he goes out. It only takes a second's lapse of attention, but certainly makes you think...

really sorry to hear this sad news Bephlam

Whilst Snowdrop is a RAF copper, he was 15 years police Dog Handler prior to moving up the ranks - he faints in horror when he sees 'well meaning' dog owners passing their beloved pooch some human chocolate - it is SOOOO no good for dogs.

I am so sorry Bephlam, you cannot - no matter how much you love and protect - be prepared for the dog that thinks he knows better than you

My deepest apologies for awakening such a sad thread, but Madmax and I came in this evening and found that Ludo had scoffed a whole net bag of choccie coins.

I know this is a painful subject but I have to ask how and when do I know that he is going to be okay?

How old is he Shirley? He's only a little guy isn't he? I'd be tempted to ring the emrgency vet... Or force feed him some salt water to make him pike...

A few important questions Shirley - is he a small dog? How much (in weight) did he consume, and what % choccie content?

You need to make them sick within 2 hours of consumption. So, you can do this with oil (pour it down his throat and make him sick), charcoal or epson bath salts. They are all horrible, but will make him sick.

You can't wait to see if he's going to be ok - it doesn't work like that. If he's eaten more than 2oz of chocolate I'd be seriously concerned. The signs of theobromine posioning is increased heart rate, increased breathing, agitation, sickness, etc.

I hate to say it, but if it has been longer than 2 hours...and a lot of good quality chocolate consumed, I'd take him to the vets for some fluids and possible charcoal tablets.

Let us know how he is.

He is a mini dachshund, 9 years old. Chocolate was cheapo choccie coins from Lidl so hopefully not much proper chocolate. He scoffed it between 2.30 and 5pm (kids don't know if the gold foil was strewn around the house when they got in - they just don't take any notice). He seems okay but bloated and cheesed off as he hasn't had dinner tonight - size of a mini hippo just now!!!

hopefully he is going to be okay.

Milk chocolate? how much - one of those little net bags??

If so I'm pretty sure he'll be fine - but 'keeping an eye' really won't do anything. It's like taking 100 paracetamol then saying, well I'll keep an eye and see how I fair.

If it's one of those little kiddie net bags he'll be fine, but if his heart or breathing rate increases and he appears agitated at all - phone the vet immediately. It's not worth waiting....I know!

                  Good luck Shirley!

Yup, milk choc - cheap, about a half a net of choccy coins - think son had ate the biggest ones! He seems okay but a bit fat at the mo. Not bothered other than he hasn't had dinner so he is mooching for that.

He has scoffed whole advent calendars in the past and I never knew choccy was so bad for them (even though we have always had dogs). Little beggar got into the top kitchen basket to nick them!)

he'll be fine - that's not a lot of choccie, even for a little dog. If it was good quality stuff I'd be worried, but cheapo choccie coins shouldn't cause him any problems.

                      He's a little begger though!!!

I'll say he is - he has been begging for the venison I am carving up to put in the freezer! I had thought that indicated not much bad effect (thank goodness). Just as well there are no plain choccy fans in the house - but then again there wouldn't be any to store if that was the case.

He is now snoring merrily in his basket - still miffed that I haven't fed him.

I will report back in the morning (prolly after cleaning up the choccy effect)
