  • Ah the answer is a flask made up before other half leaves for work, I spent 6 months on crutches, not able to put foot down at all for first 8 week when I had my ligaments fixed in my ankle. HB would make up a flask for me before leaving for school and mum would pop in with the paper at lunch time and refill for me. You'll have great biceps by the time your off them though

    • I also moved the computer chair(one with wheels) into the kitchen so I could sit down when doing stuff, as my foot used to swell if upright for too long especially at the beginning or when I got new plaster on.

        • Hey, welcome back Sarah, I remember making a plate of sandwiches in the kitchen on my first day alone after my accident, and then thinking 'right...how am I gonna get this back to the sofa?' I didn't, I ended up eating my lunch standing up in the kitchen!

I would recommend getting one of those special plaster cast covers (like a big see-through thigh length boot with elasticated top) so that you can shower without getting it wet. I think I was given the mailorder info once the temporary cast was taken off and i got a proper one put on. I felt much more human once i could shower again (even though OH had to help me in and out! Very undignified!)

          • Thanks for all the tips - keep them coming
I'm thinking of trying to get hold of a wheelchair for going out, I truly don't have the strength to go far on the crutches, my back & wrists won't take it either! I have no idea how long healing will take I presume it'll be at least 6 weeks? Hope it doesn't encroach on seed sowing time

            • 6 weeks for a normal fracture sarah, I think your in for the long haul, when I broke my wrist in 4 places I had 3 or 4 different casts, I think it was about 8 months altogether, I didnt have pins though (alergic to anastetic) so maybe you will be a bit faster, I wouldnt be planning on high heels for valentines if I were you.
              xxxx good luck

              • and when they offer you physio, take it! I could barely move my ankle when the cast came off finally (I did lots of ligament damage), but the physio worked wonders. I've got almost full range of movement and only get the odd twang every now and again.

I know what you mean about the crutches being tiring. I could barely go any distance at all. I'd have to stop every 5 hops to catch my breath and rub my wrists. It gets so much easier when you're down to one crutch, but for now you've just got to grin and bear it I'm afraid.

                • Thinking of you Sarah. I hate to say it but hearing how much pain you are in has made me feel so much better. You know where we are if you need to rant.

Can I join you on the sofa? What shall we watch?
