  • The First of……2023

A thread for you to post first sightings of the year. Anything gardening or nature related.
Do please add photos if you can.
I thought it might be good for future reference for you personally in years to come seeing as the the weather/ climate seems to be changing year on year….

I’ll start us off with my first sighting - a butterfly … not sure but it looked a bit like a Peacock or Red Admiral as I just caught a flash or two of red.
Its been below -11C recently here….incredible that it could have survived as a chrysalis or butterfly through that!
No photo as it flew by too quickly.

Just spotted these near my back door . They weren’t in flower when the cold snap ended!
Lovely to see a bit of colour even if the slugs have spotted them too

Anyone else got any ‘firsts’ yet?

The sun came out briefly and I spotted the first flowers in my rosemary shrub.

      sorry they are sideways!

Yes, my rosemary is in blossom and one cream polyanthus.
I will try again to take a pic.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

A gorse bush in flower in a nearby field.
Drove past too quickly for a photo…sorry!

I forgot to mention that earlier this week I spotted a couple of clumps of daffs in full flower. I’m reminding myself for next year to compare that the location was next to the petrol forecourt in town. Clearly warmer in town.
Even so…it was very uplifting to see , so much so that I pointed them out excitedly to OH

I noticed a shrub in our front garden is coming out in flower. I mentioned this to OH who said he’d noticed it a couple of weeks ago but forgot to mention it

Anyway- at least he took a photo for me!
                    Anyone know what it’s called?

A search using Google Lens suggests winter honeysuckle.

I take no credit for. I just right clicked on your photo and then clicked search image using Google.

My first daffodil opened this morning.
2 days earlier than last year,
