Just to add to the confusion. I used to visit a technical help forum, and the regulars mostly used Linux, and several of them were people whose business was fixing computers. They used Windows when fixing someone-else's windows machine but for their own use Linux was the preferred option. They were always full of advice for visitors (mostly comprehensible, until they started arguing amongst themselves).
That said I still tend to the opinion that there are 2 categories of computers Prototypes and Obsolete.......

I only really used it for emails and eBay in the beginning. But now I have a digital camera, I play about with pics. I design gardens on it. Keep my diay on it. I'm doing a veg planner. I shop, surf, pay bills, use it as a dictionary/encyclopedia/info base, and just generally play around with it.

Oh yeah, I 'talk' to you lot, nick recipes and gardening tips too.

Sadly, I don't know what I'd do without it it's probably the single most useful tool in the whole house.

then trial one, see which you prefer, if you are windows bred you will find it hard at first to switch, but thats all it is, learnig a new way of doing things ( and its not THAT different, french /spanish not japanese/eskimo)if you are the typoe of person that can switch easily, try it, if you find computers hard....sorry mac guys....stick with what you know.

I was always a bit "scared" of computers, and that was really because it was a fear of the unknown - i didn't know how they were worked and was just scared that I'd bust it. When i decided to buy a computer, i bought a PC, and to be honest i didn't really know that MAC's existed.
I found that i got really frustrated by the PC - it seemed to freeze , became really slow and just couldn't do what i wanted to do. I don't think it was incapable just that i wasn't confident enough to fully utilise it, because everytime i tried to do something it just seemed to crash. In the end i just used i to play solitare!!

When it eventually became unusable, i did a lot of research and some one mentioned a MAC. They seemed to be more suited to me (photo's itunes) etc, so i took the plunge. And now i'd never go back!!! It just never gives me any problems and i love it. People at work talk about VISTA and how awful they find it, or their system has crashed, and i just don't have those problems.

Yes i know MAC's are more expensive, but i truly think they are beautiful - both to work with and look at!!

Someone posted earlier that software is more expensive for a MAC and that some software isn't even written for it. that's true, but with Bootcamp, you can run Windows on a MAC. I'm not sure why you would - unless it is solely for a particular programme - but you have a choice.

I can't see that I'll ever go back to a PC. It was a gamble for me when i switched - but I'm so glad i did.

as to the software, i have no idea if it IS more expensive, its more of a case of owning £6000 worth of software for windows ( its taken me years to accumilate and upgrade), software i need, and not being able to switch it to a MAC or afford to re-buy it, guess thats why they did it in the first place

Thanks for all your help. Greatly appreciated.

I'm not in the position of replacing my poota at the moment, and a I really don't need to, I just thought i'd ask the question. I've heard of Linux too, and I know there are other operating systems, but to be honest it's all a bit over my head, to me it's a toy!

Anyway, must stop rambling, work to do and all that. Back later.

            Cheers all. X

I thought the reason Macs don't get viruses is because no one is trying to hack the software, since 90% of the world are PC users; and the hackers want to bring down the big bad Gates.

Definitely mac.I switched to mac a year ago after our old pc has collapsed.PC was running avg scan for 2 hours and consider yourself lucky if you managed to connect to the internet a few times a week.
Both of us never downoladed music or movies or the other stuff from the internet-it's just for mail, our forums, tracking the payments(excel),typing jobs(my college assessments) and photos.
We were just fed up with constant fight with the computer.
It"s not easy to switch especially if you haven't got too many people to ask.
I'm not IT person, neither is OH, just wanted the computer that works and I don't have to know how and why it works.
We bought mac and it's great.Yes,difficult at the beginning(no right click),but everything is based on the intuition-you find all the things where you'd look for them first.
No loading drivers for the printer-mac recognizes the type instantly. The same with the camera-camera software not compatible with OS?No problem, mac found the other way-it works with iPhoto.Nikon software cd was not necessary.
This computer is still full of surprises to me-positive ones.

Price?Yes,the computer itself may seems to be more expensive, but the software-Microsoft Office-student and teacher version-last year I paid about £100,full version was around £250.iWork with the same features-around 55£.
I'm not going to fuel up the discussion pc-mac.
                      Mac JUST WORKS(forget about crashing)

                              Ubuntu through and Through

I have several computers including a desktop, laptop & netbook all running Ubuntu 8.10 (All free) and its great to just have them up & running in a minute no viruses, no forced updates and as for software 1000's of little gems that are all free and downloaded in an instance...

The money saved from not updating software over the last 5 years has been immense not just the cost but actual time as well, means more for the garden.

As for MAC's had one but got really annoyed with Itunes and DRM and premium prices for everything. Amarok and Amazon Mp3 is far better and I can play them anywhere without burning a CD first, saved a fortune in CD's.

Don't get me wrong Linux has issues but it's certainly better than Windows and far cheaper than MAC's. Furthermore, will run on old computers as I have installed many on friends ancient hardware that they were told were broken.

You can try Ubuntu while keeping Windows by trying either the live CD or put 'WUBI' in google and read about the Wubi installer...
