  • There's a comet coming...

This weekend will be the best chance to see a newly discovered comet (named Nishimura), in the north-eastern sky before sunrise on Saturday and Sunday. It apparently has a slightly greenish tail because it's more gas than dust.

If you miss it, you will have to wait another 437 years to see it again!
    Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
    Endless wonder.

Thanks for the reminder, mh. I've just checked our weather report... cloudy, unfortunately. Fingers crossed that changes.

        Good luck comet-spotting, everyone.

Thanks for the info mh, if I miss it this weekend I will pay particular attention the next time it comes round
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Apparently it’s visible for a few more days after the weekend…so that gives us more of a chance.
The direction to look is just before dawn where the sun will rise. Frustratingly that’s where he have a large hill, so I’m hoping it’s not hidden behind that

Its amazing to think it was only discovered last month

Rary - if you do see it next time , do let us know

It’s a clear sky. I can see exactly where it should be but can’t see it.
It’s very hazy above the hill so I’m waiting to see if it pops up from behind the hill.
I found a great free site , so I know precisely where to look!

I can see the slither of the moon and Venus and apparently it’s down and to the left.
I’ll give it a bit longer but it may be as I feared that it’s behind the hill. It means taking the car out to get on top of the hill .

There's too much cloud here to see anything, even the moon.

I found a website suggesting it might not be that easy to see without a telescope or binoculars, Nicos. I had binoculars at the ready this morning, but there was a big bank of cloud right where it shouldn't have been.

I’ll get my binoculars out for tomorrow morning then Snoop - thanks for that.
I think my guess that the hill might be blocking the view though might be accurate

It's getting closer and closer to the horizon now, by the sounds of it from this article: https://www.space.com/new-comet-nish...ible-naked-eye

Another good read with some lovely photos. I was a bit mystified by the Stonehenge one till I clicked on it: https://www.space.com/new-comet-nish...september-2023
