I consider my self a moderate drinker (2 bottles a night may be 3)I get my beer from our corner shop.£4.25 for 3 bottles
Our precious government is talking of stopping cheap booze.
Why should I suffer for the mindless idiots who go over the top.
Ps I try & have at least one night alcohol free.

i can easily do a bottle of wine a nite, thats why i brew my own now, its less alcoholic and cheap as chips,no chemicals, so no hangover.

been reading and hearing about this under the counter thingy with the cigs, as has been said elsewhere its supposed to stop the underage smokers by using the outta sight outta mind thingy. Yeah like that works, i have chocolate in the fridge, can't see it from here, the kitchen, the fridge or the chocolate but is it outta mind, yeah course lol.

But isn't it going to make it easier for the unscrupulous (sp) seller to sell to the under 18's. All they have to do is have other things, chocolate bars, crisps under the counter, put the cigs in a paper bag, hand the paper bag over, who from looking at any shops cctv is going to know exactly whats in the bag. At least if there is any under age at the counter, and the cigs on show behind it would have to be very good sleight (sp) of hand for the seller to pass the cigs/baccy to the under age in full view.

and as i've also read, illegal drugs aren't on show but are still being easily bought by anybody whatever age that wants them. How long are we smokers and non smokers gonna be stood behind the person who wants to know what brands and what prices are under the counter. The only reduction i can see from this will be the reduction in jobs, those that make the display stands, corner shops coz people can't be bothered to queue while the smokers in front of them find out/decide which brand is for sale/which one they want. Also what about the specialist tobacco shops (just love the smells in there) how will they survive when everything is under the counter.

just my twopence worth from some one who used to smoke, but now maybe has less than 20 a year, sometimes maybe 10 in a good year, who is married to a smoker. Who believes if you want to smoke, smoke, but please just have a bit of consideration for others who don't like the smoke.

I smoke and i know its bad for me, but hiding the fags wont help me give up. I have to be ready and in the right frame of mind to give up.

I am fanatical about the smell, about smoking in public about being a smoker full stop, but i still find a way....that's why its an addiction rather than a fun habit.

Hiding the fags may not help those already addicted ~ but it could stop kids from starting in the first place.

Nobody wants their kids to smoke, do they? Making it harder to buy fags can only be a good thing, if it stops children from taking up the habit.

Out of sight, out of mind does work. My addiction isn't fags, but Doritos. I don't want crisps if I don't have them in the house ... but if I know they're in the house, I can think of nothing else. Mr Sheds is the same with cheese.

we all have different trigger points TS, for some out of sight works, for others it doesn't - we have an example of that in the posts from you and m3bfs.

There is only one way to stop people from smoking - that is to ban it, make it illegal - oh hang on ... didn't they try that with cannabis.... ignore me!

But by making smoking more and more socially unacceptable, it might work. It's (nearly) worked for drink-driving.

I remember in my yoof that it was considered 'big and funny' if you managed to drink whilst drunk - not by me I must add .... but now everyone dislikes drunk-drivers/mobile users whilst driving - and that is how it should be

That's a good point. Some of us...*ahem*...may have parents and in-laws who didn't think that driving back home on a country road after getting squiffy at someone's house party counted as drink driving. 'It was the Seventies' isn't really a good excuse. The children of that generation obviously think that was barmy and know that drink driving is abhorrent.

The young people I know in their teens think smoking is gross and aren't tempted at all, so maybe the message is filtering through.

And mobile 'phone users when driving! Grrr... that's a pet hate - I was very, very nearly taken out whilst crossing the road, quite pregnant, by a kid driving too fast, straight through a red light, chatting on the 'phone. I still get nervous on that crossing!

As Ive said I smoke, I do try to be considerate aboout it though. However I hate the thought of my children smoking, double standards I know!
The govt is sending such a mixed message here. They claim they want to reduce the number of kids smoking but they have decided they will continue to sell packs of 10 so that adults can cut down. This is madness, many kids buy packs of 10 cos they are cheaper
