I received an e-mail today at work informing me that I'm taking part in one of these "Secret Santa" jobbies, maximum spend is £7.50. My victim, sorry recipient has recently discovered the delights of home growing, any idea's what would be a good gift? I have to have it ready for 9 am on Friday.

Our local garden centre had some great amusing plaques about the joys of gardening.

Can't improve on that, it's not like the recipient doesn't know the value when it's a secret santa. It seems unimaginative - but you know it will be appreciated.

If you can get into Focus/B&Q/Homebase, they all have some lovely gardening "Sets" in at the moment, especially Homebase - they had some gorgeous seed boxes last time I was in
Or how about bare root fruit trees? Poundstretcher/iNSTORE?Lidl/Aldi/Morrisons etc may have them in stock for a few pounds each and they wouldn't mind being gift-wrapped.

I think the apricot tree our mates got for Andi was 8.99 at Homebase...apparently they had quite a selection at the same price.

Sorry just realised you've got 7.50 to spend....for some reason thought it was 9.50.

Our local QD has seed for 10p, winter plants like cyclamen/ivy/pansies etc for £2 each. You could make up a lovely winter basket for £7.50.

Loose bulbs are about 20 for a quid (daffs, crocus etc).

Have you got anything like that near you?

My nearest allotment assiciation has a shop, I could pop in there on my way home; I'm sure I could make up some sort of basket from there. Being what it is (non-profit making) there prices are very good too.

For those of you who may wish to know the outcome, I went for - drum roll please - a 10KG tub of chicken manure from Homebase. Went down a treat.

So when people ask him what he got, he can say with absolute accuracy, "A pile of cr*p!"... beats the other cr*p that people give each other every year handsdown! Nice one Camsdad!
