I'm sure he'll be fine Tammy....& from the sounds of it he enjoys his visits with you also...so I'm sure once he's recovered he'll be back with you.
Maybe whilst he's recovering you could either have him round or visit him for a cuppa & get inspired for what's to do in the new gardening year....he sounds an inspirational chap,so even if he's no longer able to provide the physical help,p'raps he can still be on hand for the occasional brain storming session??
    Now...Stop worrying!!!xx
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

Joe sounds great Tammy & I'm sure he'll be fine. We used to have a retired gardner who helped mow the lawn & keep the garden tidy when I was young. We didn't need a gardener & couldn't afford one either but he'd worked at the same company as dad & had been the gardener/odd job man there & couldn't bear to be retired. We used to give him a few bob for a pint, a cup of tea & piece of cake & he was happy!

He sounds a great fellow to have about. My ma in law is 84 and has just recently had her second hip replaced. Elective surgery is a different kettle of fish to emergency surgery. She is just fine, very active and mobile as will your friend.
