Just heard on the radio that the X-factor winner (don't remember their name and quite honestly don't care), has released a version of the classic Hallelujah (originally a Cohen song, but sang most famously - and arguably it's best by the late, great Jeff Buckley), and that it's set to top the charts. However there has been an "online" campaign (Facebook I think) to get the Buckley version to top the charts. A friend of mine (a huge Cohen fan) sent me the link/group on Bookface and I joined, and have now subsequently downloaded the Jeff Buckly single (even though I already have it on Grace - Buckleys' album).
Seems I'm not alone:
Hallelujah set to be a Christmas No 1 and 2 | Music | The Guardian
Haven't heard the new version, but I can imagine its another example of the Beyonce/Mariah/Alicia camp where it's more of a "look at how I can make my voice go up and down, and don't I have such range" song than a heartfelt version of the original song.
Do the right thing - get Buckley to the top, we owe it to Leonard (who is purported to chart in the top 40 also with his version)
Sorry to campaign, but I cannot stand the X-Factory and alike where they churn out "talent", only to discard it the following year to make way for the next.
