HIs obituary was in today's Telegraph. 96. His were the first gardening books I ever bought. All from W H Smith, remember them?
The writing in the Telegraph has gone down hill since the passing of Fred Whitsey. The other day someone suggested abandoning roses as they need maintenance, overlooking scent and repeat flowering of many roses.

His books were also my first gardening books too, I loved them.

That’s really sad to hear.
I have about 5 different books of his.
I had two of his Vegetable Expert…the very mucky, torn , splodgy one was the one I kept in the shed on my first allotment.
All the rest I kept at home to refer to, but that particular one was thumbed through thousands of times during sowing, planting out, pruning…you name it, it was sat in the mud by my side.

Sad to hear this news. I have 5 of his "Expert" books and still refer to them regularly. They are a goldmine of information, even if some of it is becoming a little out of date. The tree and shrub one has been used so much over the years that it is falling apart - the ultimate seal of approval.
