What a wonderful program!

I have been learning so much and crying buckets. Oh the stories those people have to tell.

It has just said that tomorrows story tells of the evacuees sent abroad as the parents thought they would be safer and of the ship that sank claiming 80 childrens lives - OMG - what our older generation went through it is almost beyond my comprehension.

I have found it so sad hearing about the kids that went to homes that really didnt want them and didnt try to hide that fact. I think the saddest stories so far were the ones yesterday of the kids who were never reclaimed at the end of the war - as a Mum I really dont know how on earth a parent could do that (although I am sure some situations MIGHT have warranted it?). I think it must have been bad enough to send your kiddies off in the first place - however much safer it would have made them.

Anyone else been watching?

my mum just rang me up in tears after watching this, brings back bad memories for her, although it also cleared up some questions as to why she was evacuated in the first place when london kids where being sent down here.

i watched the rest of it, i knew already what she went through and how feeling so unwanted she felt, it must have been a hard choice for parents, but the resentment it left in an entire generation tells me a lot about my mum and her relationship with me.

my dad was also evacuated during the war, but while he was away, his mother died under a bomb, and his father was killed in france. all i know is he was sent to cornwall, just as they started bombing there, he won't talk about it. not a happy time, my mums family stayed with her mum, while her dad was fighting.

I have been watching, very emotional.

I haven't watched it, and probably wont.

However, I do know two people, both men, now in their sixties, who's Mums sent them away when they were little. Both Mums had another child (one older, one younger) that they kept.

Explain that one - or better still, try explaining it to the two guys...

What a pity they waited 70 years before making this program, there would have ben a lot more people to interview if it had been made 10 years ago

Saw some of it yesterday and on the whole it looks well made (although they should stop repeating themselves every ad break!). Yes there are sad stories but we need to put it into context, by far the majority of the parents would be doing what they thought was best for their famillies in very difficult times. Also did wonder a bit about the old boy who blamed his billet for a life of crime - yes he had a very bad time but he had a mind of his own and didn't have to become a safe breaker, plently of others didn't and he seemed to give it up Ok when he met his wife so whilst he obviously didn't get the care he should on the south coast, it was a long time ago and there are times when we need to have more personal responsibility for our actions - before somebody jumps down my throat, I'm not talking about him nicking stuff to feed his brothers here but about the large scale stuff that followed.
