I got a vegetable curry from the Chinese, with chicken in it. And Nan used to make me omelette with ham in it ("it's only a little bit, pick it out if you're that bothered")

I often have to eat like this when we go out ... it's either pick the meat off, or embarrass everyone by making a fuss.
I ask if the veg is cooked in animal or vegetable fat, and they don't know.
I ask if the gravy is vegetarian, and they don't know. (and could care less)

So I eat what I can, to be polite.
btw Bisto granules are vegetarian, and Roast spuds are usually cooked in veg oil.
A lot of desserts are not vegetarian (if gelatine is used); neither is most cheese, beer and wine.
It's not easy, esp. with people who try and catch you out all the time You wouldn't try and sneak a peanut onto the plate of an allergic person, yet people think it's funny to sneak a bit of meat onto my plate

Dont get me started on vegetarians my OH is one and whilst that is ok he is so fussy, I am not allowed to put dishes in the diswasher that have had anything thats not suitable for veggies, He hates me cooking anything that isnt veggie, I have known him smash dishes cos they were used by mistake. We very rarely go out cos of him even on holiday. I insist on turkey at christmas for the rest of the family but I have to clean the oven on boxing day before I am allowed to use it, its self cleaning. I would love to invite people over more often but I hate giving them all veggie stuff when they are not. I could do with two kitchens one for him and one for the rest of us. We have seperate dishes for eating off, and cutlery.

Jackie, that's not Vegetarianism, that's OCD.

I bet if he had to do the cleaning himself, he wouldn't be so fussy x

He washes his dishes and some of the pans as long as they are not meat ones. The rest go in the dishwasher. I must admit sometimes I wish he wasnt veggie but no chance of changing him. It causes lots of arguments between us. I knew from the start that he was so its my fault for giving in to him and making it easier on me to cook one meal instead of two, he says its like religion and doesnt want others to feel they have to be the same. Huh, he makes sure we dont eat or buy meat by doing the shopping himself and I have to buy any meat things I want.

I buy and cook meat for Mr Sheds, it doesn't bother me.
I tend to cook a veggie meal as the base (it was chick pea curry last night, it'll be pasta tonight) and then add meat to his portion.

Ha! Do we have the same FIL? Mine does just the same thing and (for a man who can't/won't cook/smokes like a chimney) seems to have very 'refined' taste buds that prefer a Frey Bentos tinned pie with tinned carrots to 'real' food. He'll never change

I'm not veggie, but do normally eat as such when out. I had a Christmas dinner with a large group, once and the veggie option (some courgette swimming in water with cheap cheese grilled on top) had 'pigs in bacon' all around the plate. Idiots!

When I first met OH I invited him kite flying, afterwards he asked if he could buy me lunch, I said no thanks I cant stand crap food and thats all you'll get round here, come beck to mine and I'll make some soup, he was astonished, I made butternut squash soup (he'd never had it before) and its still his favorite now.
Also he was a veggie who wouldnt eat tomatos broccoli cabbage and lots of other things. now he isnt veggie (we only eat happy meat) and he eats everything with gusto, if I leave the salt and pepper out though he will just put it on before hes tried it, I just keep them in the cupboard.

Last year's works do (we had booked me in as Special Needs):- the starter was fish.
I asked for the veggie option, and the waitress looked panicked, called for backup, then they brought me a glass of orange juice

Rick Stein (on the same prog last night) did a blind taste test on turkey, between battery and free range, just before turkey b was brought in he said ' remember free range can cost upto or at least 4 times more than battery, does it show in the taste'. He was the only one to vote for a, and visably (sp) shrank when he opened the envelope he'd voted for the supermarket battery turkey.

when i was working on school dinners, we had a couple of kids say they were vegetarian when they were tucking into meat (can't remember what), so were asked why there were no vegetables on their plates, the answer coz we're vegetarians and vegetarians don't eat vegetables. Or there was another one, wouldn't eat the mashed potatoes coz they weren't chips, and he didn't like potatoes, didn't believe that chips were potatoes lol.

I make cards and other craft goodies, find when mention home made, noses suddenly turn up, but the same people suddenly become quite interested when HAND made is mentioned. Wonder if its the same with food. After all if it says HANDmade in shops, its usually quite a bit dearer.

Hubby surprised himself the other day, we've been watching UK FOOD, for a couple of weeks and there was a quick ad on for philly cheese recipes. He decided to try the pasta and mushroom sauce. It was delicious, but the bit that got me, he turned round after eating it, said he enjoyed it even though there was no meat in it!!!!! I think he must have been brought up to only believe a meal was nice and filling if it had meat in. Me i like quite a few different meals that don't have meat, as well as meals with meat. I like what i like whatever it is.

Definately OCD! I'm a veggie but I still cook meat for my wife and daughter. If he's that worried about the dishwasher, put it on a 75deg wash! Cooking both is not a problem, Rice/potatoes are the same for both, the veg is the same, the only thing that is different, it the meat and the meat substitute ( and the gravy if you're having any).

If we go out to friends, I just have the potatoes and the veg. I'm happy with that. It's my choiceto be vegetarian not someone elses therefore it's me who accomodates.

and another thing.... since when is fish considered to be a vegetable? arrgh!!!!

If its shop bought and doesnt say suitable for veggies then he wont buy it even if the ingrediants which he knows like the back of his hand are ok. He doesnt eat anything whereby an animal has been killed to get the product and deffo no fish.

Mr OWG was brought up like this... it's not a proper meal without meat in it

He has slowly come around, and now we can have (for example) pasts, that doesn't have any meat in it!!

its a pretty strong learning that one, i was like it for years, but to be honest we only have a meal with meat in it about three times a week, oh and fish once a week if that counts?

the kids have got quite used to a cheese salad or mushroom rissotto, veg soup etc, and it does save on the food bill!
