  • Government "loans"

I think this is a case of our "New" Labour government hitting the poorest in the land again, the very people they should be helping.

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

well, you know - what with bailing out the bankers and now the (very cash rich!!) Indian-owned Jaguar-Land Rover .... money has to come from somewhere to support all these bail-outs!

I do hope you can all see where my tongue is whilst I type this response

this government seems hell bent on punishing those least able to afford it.

Makes me wonder if they are out to cause as much trouble as they can before the election, knowing full well they are likely to lose it anyway, so that the conservatives have to take the blame when they get in.
or am i just being a cynic?

I was just reading this story before I opened the Vine. It's sickening isn't it? 2% per month interest puts them amongst the catalogue/store cards/GE Capitals !!! HOW is that supposed to help people?!
I must say, I am properly flabbergasted, horrified & sickened that this is even being considered. The Social Fund is an absolute life-line to people, and is already strict enough about their criteria for lending money - years ago, we had to borrow from them, and someone visited to check that the money was required for what we said it was.

It's all just more confirmation to me that this government has totally lost the plot...

best to keep a close eye on what else they are up to, cos usually when they do something that's causing an uproar its to cover their tracks about something else they don't want us to notice.

on listening to this item on the news just now - it appears to be (yet another) meeja spin and twist and turn.

It seems they (Brown's Boys) are looking at and attempting to stop loan sharks who will be surely out for a good bite at this credit-crunch/recession times - now if this is the case, it is only good.

which is fine, except people who still rely on these loans will still have to pay interest, surely its better to tighten up on who they are lending to and what for, rather than just charge interest in the hope that will stop loan sharks?

maybe instead of cash, vouchers for the goods should be issued, once you have told them which cooker , school uniform, etc you are after.

the idea of it being interest free is to prevent the poorest from falling into the hands of loan sharks and credit companies, this goes against the principle of social loans.

oh indeed - and their aim is (so they said) to tighten up on the sharks and they will not (so they said) be charging interest on the emergency loans.

However, we only have the meeja and the governments spin/take on this story - so I'll go down the pub and leave 'em to it - whilst we, as ever, will be left to pick up pieces/deal with fall out

yep, we wont know for sure what they are going to do till they roll it out, by which time as usual it will be too late.

I have always voted labour except once, but i have to be honest, i cant wait for a general election, this bunch have been in power far too long.

I am slightly ashamed to say that I am on the apolitical side - but I do make an effort to vote because of Emily and her buddies and because of people like Snowdrop who are willing and prepared to fight for our right to do so
