I saw those designs SBP, clearly hugely out of my price range, which is why I am building it myself.
Just a very basic design, straight walls and a roof.
It was only a brief call to my chippy mate at home. He just worked it out on a fag packet and gave me a figure well over 130 panes, which I couldnt see. I will be seeing him when home to get him to draw me a plan etc, and things then may become clearer. I just want to reserve the right amount of glass beforehand to ensure I have them.
I do know that I have triangles on my current g/h but I cant think where they go. I dont know a glass cutter in France and I've never done it myself, so I may just buy any fancy shapes from a shop here.
Thanks all, I reckon if I get about 85 panes that should cover me for breakages etc
And at a pound a pane thats not bad value really.

Well looking at the different designs that are possible, I'd say err on the side of generosity - those 'cold frames' on the side of the greenhouse looked very useful.

Do not forget that the glass overlap's a bit ie- not 3 for a 6 ft wall unless you are good at cutting glass and is the glass new or preowned (there's posh) have you given that some thought ....jacob

have you taken into concideration any overlape of the glass?,as in a aluminium frame,or are you all in wood and putty/beading,

Jacob there wont be an overhang as all will be wood framed, each individual pane. The actual height will be slightly more than 8ft due to the frame as well.
            LD yes, beaded and mastic/putty.
SBP I have rounded up my estimate to 100 panes, and am going to try and construct some form of cold frame outside as well.

Haveing another look at your question Bob i would sugest you make the framework fit the glass i did that with some double glazing panel's 20 year's ago they were 3ftx3ft 6inch's 2 pane's of glass for £2 each but had to learn how to split the panel's without breaking but it can be done so make the frame fit the glass it might be easier than a lot of glass cutting.jacob

At a £1 a pop it's probably safer (how much are they usually then?)...have you allowed for breakages too?

As for the 2nd part of your question, well if your greenhouse ends up looking like any of the designs I linked to, then the answer is 'very'!

As long as the glass aint going anywhere fast............underestimate amount and purchase glass...........build the greenhouse, and if you are short..........go get some more!........Sorted!

But there's my biggest problem Snadger. The glass is in UK and I'm not. The cost of a ferry ticket to collect is extortionate, so am only doing the trip once. Therefore I have to overestimate. If I have spare I can make more cold frames etc.
Eventually I will have some mahoosive glass creation similar to what SBP has put links to previously.

Is glass an under the counter commodity in France then?

" Excuse me Sir, can you open your suitcase please?"............. But I've only got sheets of greenhouse glass in it! "Better watch you don't trip over then sir......oops.........I must have left my foot in the way....silly me"
