Rhona- my first birthday cake was an upright teddy bear and it's head kept falling off so I had to hold it in place with a knitting needle ( teddy with knitting needle through skull...poor kid has been scared of horror movies ever since!!!)...and nope- I never thought about a sleeping Teddy

That's hilarious! I did something similar when I decorated Mr R a Birthday cake a few years ago...I tried to make a little surf dude out of marzipan, and have the little guy riding a marzipan wave, on his marzipan surfboard. The marzipan figures kept collapsing so I tried to pin it all in place with cocktail sticks. By the time I presented him with it, all surrounded by candles, it looked like a little cake-based voodoo ceremony .

If it's a total disaster, then she'll only be one and won't notice! Hurrah!

Unless you totally have your heart set upon the mould~in which case ignore me do!!!~but they do tend to be incredibly pricey,I made DD a castle with swiss rolls~took a few attempts to get them to roll up without breaking, but took me back to my schooldays in home ec!!there's a piccie in my profiley/album thing.
My robot suffered from a fally offy head also....fixed with a wine bottle covered in foil to prop him up!I say the rustic/homemade look iswhat I attempt to achieve!
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Most of the cakes I have made have been covered in a thin layer of Cadbury's chocolate which is also used to stick bits together.
When it's set it holds unusual shaped bits solidly in place!

I'm not so keen on eating icing- although the creative finishes to cakes can be amazing ( as we have seen posted here!)
