  • left overs for chooks

With all the different foods left over from Xmas I'm trying different foods out on the chooks ( please someone tell me if they would actually eat something they shouldn't???)

A huge bag of tablet eventually got the better of me , and I couldn't give it away ( too sweet) ...so chooks LOVED it ( thank goodness they don't have teeth)

Stilton rind went the same way yesterday..yum yum

I know to be careful not to give too much variety in case they get the 'plops'....but it's interesting to see what they will eat .
( I know not to give raw potato nor lots of bread)

Have you tried them with something different?

I made some really disgusting lardy biscuits......none of us could bare to get them close enough to our mouths to try them, but the chooks loved'm!!Probably wouldn't give them too much of them tho.
I'm still puzzled about the whole meat/fish/dairy thing....some say it's fine, others that you shouldn't??....my mum gave me a huge bag of left over christmas bits including stuffing, batters, fried bread & pigs in blankets....I fished out the meat & gave them everything else....chooks running around with batter puddings on their beaks is almost up there with the cherry toms for entertainment value!!
Ours often also get left over cake or trimmings from a shaped cake, but only occassionally.
I'm pretty sure they'll steer clear of anything that'll do them any major harm....although will stand to be corrected.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

chickens are omnivores ...... slugs and snails are meat ....... mine have picked the turkey leg bones clean, like little vultures, they eat meat cos they need the protein for the inside of the eggs...... processed crap probably isn't too great,

i found this site that is pretty good

Mine tucked into a piece of beef bone which had a bit of meat stuck to it. I threw it out after they'd got bored so as not to encourage rats.
I can understand not feeding them much fish- somehow don't fancy fishy tasting eggs!

          Interesting site Lynda!
