Weird Thing...Any Ideas?

This morning we woke to - what we thought - was a thick frost. However, on closer inspection, we saw that the 'frost' was in fact a layer of minute pieces of fibre, which had covered our street, the cars, gardens, everything. Not sure what kind of area was covered all in all as we went back inside!

It looks vaguely plasticky, but pretty much like frost until you examine it closely. It settled during the night and we're baffled! What on earth could it be?

Hee hee... I asked Mr R to nip to Tesco's and "don't breathe in until you're on the main road!"

Just tried EHO - brilliantly helpful. I described the stuff and got the following from Ms. Bored Of My Job 2008:

"Do you think it was frost" (naturally, that's why I called you. To report frost.)

then

"Are you sure it's not frost? I saw frost on my car this morning."

and finally, after a pause:

"So, do you know what it is then?"

You can get very fine, fibrous frosts. We had one about 3 years ago - it was really beautiful. Bring a bit inside. If it disappears when it melts it's just fancy frost. If there's a residue - then I'd worry!

Any fires nearby? Could be ash? Sometimes when it's misty here the smoke 'collects' in the fog and hangs around more...Radioactive fallout... eer happy new year?

Sounds like frost to me - if it's been super cold (which it has) the frost takes on a different form. What you describe is exactly like the frost that has gathered on my kale plants.

We had a frost last night and a brief snow flurry at daybreak which lasted 5 mins at most. This left a dusting of very fine snow which blew away at the first sign of a breeze!

Think it might be spelt HOAR as what you spelt means something completely different where I come from
But that's the stuff I have on my kale !
