this is a brilliant makeup book: Kevyn Aucoin was an absolute genius at makeovers. It would be a lovely present ... or you could order it from your library.

If you want to treat her for her birthday try this company...buy a gift, i use them all the time (just bought OH a day driving an Audi R8), If you go to the pampering section and look for "professional make lesson" this sounds perfect, its priced at £44.04 and is all over the country, ive used the clinque counter loads of time for a free session and its fab, but as you mentioned it could be a gift this could be better.

I learned from teen magazines but also from shops such as the Body Shop who do free makeovers (sometimes you need to book) but also most of the counters in Boots / Debenhams / John Lewis do too such as Clinique, Benefit (quite a "trendy" young persons brand). As someone has mentioned - you will need to tread very lightly as i would have been mortified if someone told me i looked bad. Perhaps you could offer to buy her some makeup for her birthday & include the makeover at the counter as part of the gift so she can choose what bits she wants.

We tell her all the time lol She takes it very well. All her friends look the same. My daughter uses make up but not like my niece does so I will probably try and get them both in, I was thinking like a make over as a treat. show them how to do it properly so you look good. Personaly I dont wear make up only when going somewhere special. Two sheds that book looks good too. She is just starting to realise that low cut tops are a no no as well. She has started to buy better clothes, she has always wanted designer wear but not had funds to buy any, my nephew and his gf took her to exeter and showed her you can look good in cheaper stuff if you dress it up and that way you can have more clothes, but its ok as well to have one or two more expensive things.

However I agree with the posters advising against making an issue ouy of this.

OK, call me old-fashioned (...'you're old fashioned'...) but at that age I didn't wear make-up, but I know they all do now.

I think all kids just want to fit in and look like their mates. I remember my sister and her mates all looking like clones (I didn't do it of course ).

Like Lynda said, the more you hint or comment against it, the more they'll do it, and to a greater extreme. She's probably getting a little rebellious now, and finding her feet.

It'll get worse before it gets better.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but the bodyshop do makeovers in their shops to show you how to use their makeup and products.

I think lots of makeup is def a sign of low confidence and self esteem. I hardly wear any now but when younger and was going through hard times I couldn't leave the house with no face on.

Has she actually ASKED for advice? Does she want it? As far as I understand she's wearing makeup already - and it seems she's happy with her look. If she were really looking wierd and getting it all wrong (for the fashion which is her age group) then her peers would let her know. Sorry to say but I think its you and the other adults are the ones with the problem, not your niece. I would let it go, there will be other battles to fight of more importance than this, I would save my energy for those. Young people have always had their own style, they will always experiment and most importantly they need to 'belong' to their 'clan' - and that clan is very far removed from the clan of Dad and Auntie Jackie. I really don't think that you 'telling her all the time' (presumably that she looks awfull) is a very supportive thing to do, and won't make a blind bit of difference. Still, who wouldn't love a free makeover!! If the make up artist is sympathetic to your neices 'look' she may well just refine it a bit and make it just that bit more proffessional looking. I will say though - the products they use are not cheap! Hope you have a fun day, I'm sure it will be even if she doesn't come away from it wanting to look any different - you might discover the delights of a heavier eye liner yourself !!

A fun makeover day as a pressie sounds nice. I've always wanted one. I cringe now when I think back on the crap I used to put on my face, and the colours until I discovered how to put it on properly. Recently I threw out some old stuff and replaced it, and OH was horrifed at how much a foundation, eyeliner, lipstick and a mascara came to!! And thats the mid range prices. He nearly fainted when I showed him the prices of the 'posher' brands online. Boots natural collection is nice for younger skin Jackie.
